A NEW political association fronted by former Workers' Party (WP) election candidate James Gomez has received official approval for its registration after it agreed to changes to its Constitution.
Confirming the news, the Registry of Societies said it gave in-principle approval to the registration of Singaporeans For Democracy (SFD) on Tuesday, and gazetted it on Wednesday.
Dr Gomez told The Straits Times on Wednesday that the SFD, which seeks to promote democracy among Singaporeans, had to agree to additional clauses in its Constitution before it received approval.
These clauses bar the SFD from receiving funds from foreign donors, letting foreigners take part in its events, operating as a political party and being affiliated to any local or foreign political party.
It is also not allowed to use its funds, premises and new media platforms in any election here, including the sponsoring of any candidate or member.
Said Dr Gomez: 'We were fully cognizant of these requirements so there were no surprises. The changes will not affect our operations.'
