Actually in old day. The shop selling wine provide room for overnight. So slowly it become norm to called wine shop(hotel) as in direct transalation from Chinese.

the ways they pronounce certain words are also different.
for example: "一艘船"
taiwanese say: yi sau chuan.
prc say: yi sou chuan.
酒店 is bar.
饭店 is hotel with rooms.
酒楼 is for wedding dinner type.
餐厅 is restaurant not dining hall or canteen.

the more direct translation is "guest station" or "guest post" as there were many stopovers along the way between fortresses and/or fortified cities. these stopovers were spaced systematically apart along each route and many were built by decree of imperial orders and plans to cater to messengers on horses and caravans. most of these posts had spare horses in stables for horse swaps with imperial messengers.

i think u r wrong. those stations that were built by govt are call "yi zhan" Not the same as "ke zhan". sorry, my pc can write chinese characters.

This is taiwan style.
"Jiu dian" in PRC and SG means hotel.
In Taiwan means a place where you sit with girls and rabba rabba.

Also, "xiao jie" in SG means miss or a polite way of calling a waitress. If you call a waitress "xiao jie" in PRC, may get a slap because it means prostitute. Better call her "fu wu yuan".
