KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has today sought to allay fears over Malaysia joining the Brics intergovernmental organisation, saying it would not affect domestic politics.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar said the application process to join the bloc may take some time, but Malaysia will likely be admitted as a "partner country” soon.

Singapore Business Federation is due to hold a forum on the SEZ on Thursday aimed at potential investors, with Singapore’s trade ministry in attendance. The city’s Ministry of Trade and Industry declined to comment.

Johor’s Onn Hafiz had previously proposed that the economic zone span a vast area covering 3,505 square kilometres. That would make it larger than Shenzhen, the special economic zone which borders Hong Kong. The Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone would include 16 economic sectors, including electrical and electronics, manufacturing and healthcare.

GOOGLE has increased its investment in infrastructure in Singapore to S$6.7 billion with the completion of its fourth data centre here.

This is up from US$850 million in 2022 when its third data centre in the Republic was launched.

This was announced on Jun 3 during an event at Google’s office in Mapletree Business City II in Pasir Panjang.

More than 500 people now work in Google data centres in Singapore, the tech giant said, noting that such centres power its popular digital services such as its search engine and Google Maps.

The specifications of the new facility were not provided.

Singapore is one of 11 countries where Google currently operates data centres, with the company’s first data centre here launched in 2014 and its second coming online in 2015.

Its data centres here are all located in Jurong West.

On May 30, Google said it would invest US$2 billion in Malaysia to develop its first data centre there.

Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information Janil Puthucheary noted an increasing number of data centres are required to support the computing power capacity essential for technological needs, such as the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous systems.

“But with our energy and carbon constraints, this growth of capacity can only be realised if we can make the data centres more sustainable,” said Dr Janil, who attended the event on Jun 3.

“We are committed to growing the (data centre) sector to be more sustainable,” he said, pointing to the launch of the country’s Green Data Centre Roadmap on May 30.

Launched by Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat at the Asia Tech x Singapore event, the new road map includes plans to add 300MW of data centre capacity here in the coming years, with another 200MW allocated only for operators using green energy options.

Green standards outlined in the road map include ways to improve energy efficiency by upgrading equipment, in addition to reducing the energy required for air-conditioning by safely raising the operating temperature to 26 deg C.

Singapore has more than 70 data centres, with 1.4 gigawatts of capacity.

These currently account for 82 per cent of Singapore’s information and communications sector emissions, and 7 per cent of its total electricity consumption.

Microsoft Corp. told employees in China that starting in September they’ll only be able to use iPhones for work, effectively cutting off Android-powered devices from the workplace.

The US company will soon require employees based there to use Apple Inc. devices to verify their identities when logging in, according to an internal memo reviewed by Bloomberg News.

The measure, part of a companywide effort to fortify Microsoft products and services against hackers, will affect hundreds of workers across the Chinese mainland and is intended to ensure that all staff use the Microsoft Authenticator password manager and Identity Pass app.

May Singaporeans & investors in country of Malaysia BE PREPARED for the further sinking of the RM$ of such news. RM$4 to SGD$1 soon than later?

Malaysia is our neighbor & we Singaporeans wish them all the best, & will do all we can for the State of Johore & its citizens, & any Malaysian from other States flocking into Johore to seek honest jobs to elevate & put food on the table for their loved ones....& with such potential success, to replicate to ALL other Malaysian Federation States to uplift neighbors lives....

Money is important to all, regardless of race, language or religion. As the saying goes, money is not everything, but without money, everything becomes nothing.

What exactly are BRICS monetary system & BACKED UP with? - invasion, slaughtering/decimating innocents, poor labor laws that robs one of dignity & pride reduced to begging on knees with tears for non-existent compensation, corruption, stealing from funders, etc as proven over time & time again in Humankind history since BRIC blarney began akin to scam set cryptos?

What GUARANTEES do they give to earn the trust of the saving public, over time & not hyped up propaganda for the day to entice naive?

If BRIC monetary system is as great as those failing & irresponsibly led nations backing it up, WHY is the take up rate so low?

Money trusted into BRICS are hard earned over years - one's life savings & corporate earnings...Thus may each consider carefully with eyes wide opened....any changes within BRIC monetary system may RENDER one's savings decline to lowest value or worse into nothing...
