Malaysian church fire-bombed ahead of Muslim protests

KUALA LUMPUR: A church in Malaysia has been fire-bombed in an attack that gutted its ground floor, church officials said on Friday, escalating a dispute over the use of the word "Allah" by non-Muslims.

A fire department official said all stations were on alert for more blazes at religious buildings, ahead of planned nationwide protests on Friday by Muslim groups angry over the use of the word as a translation for the Christian "God."

The three-storey Metro Tabernacle church in suburban Kuala Lumpur was set ablaze in the attack which took place around midnight, said church leader Peter Yeow, 62.

"Witnesses saw four people smash the glass and throw incendiaries into the church building. They came on two motorcycles," he told AFP at the scene as fire department forensic officers picked through the wreckage.

There were no casualties in the attack on the church, which occupies the corner lot of a row of shop houses and which Yeow said draws some 1,500 people weekly.

"The fire destroyed the administrative part of the church. We do not know if the prayer hall on the third floor suffered any damage," he said, warning all other churches to "double their guard" against any attacks.

Anuar Harun, who headed the fire department operation, said that forensic experts were working with the police and a canine unit to probe the blaze.

"We are investigating the cause of fire. We cannot provide any more details. It is a sensitive issue," he said when asked if it was a case of arson.

"We have asked all our fire stations to be on alert for such fires on religious premises," he said.

The High Court last week ruled in favour of the Catholic "Herald" newspaper which has used "Allah" as a translation for "God" in its Malay-language section.

The ruling was suspended on Wednesday pending an appeal, after the government argued the decision could cause racial conflict in multicultural Malaysia, where Muslim Malays make up 60 percent of the population.

The security guard at the Metro Tabernacle church, 65-year-old V. Mariappan, said he had just walked away from the main entrance of the building to use the bathroom when the building erupted in flames.

"When I came back, there was a huge fire inside the church building. There was a few loud explosions like bombs exploding," he said, adding he saw two motorcycle helmets lying on the road in flames. - AFP/de

Church attackers will reap what they sow, says Nik Aziz

SHAH ALAM, Jan 9 — Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat said the attacks on Churches in the last two days should be blamed on supporters of Umno which he says had led them astray from Islam.

“Umno causes their followers to lose their conscience and they have no regard for the sacredness of religion,” said the spiritual leader of the Malaysian Islamic party or PAS.

He drew a parallel between the church attacks and the infamous cow-head protest on Aug 28 last year, when about 50 people from a suburb here, dragged a cow’s head to the state assembly to protest the relocation of a Hindu temple to their neighbourhood.

“Fortunately Hindus, who regard the animals as sacred, did not react.”

But with no religious sensitivity, others now go and burn churches without any problems, said the Pas stalwart, who was speaking to the press after a party briefing for members at the City Council’s auditorium.

Nik Aziz said the culprits who carried out both acts did not realise they were hurting the Christians and Hindus and this was a big problem.

“Their lack of conscience makes them unable to empathise with others.”

He said the culprits behind the attacks are committing a sin and will reap what they sow.

Four churches in the Klang Valley have been attacked in the last two days while others have received threats, following a recent High Court decision which allows the Catholic Church to use the term “Allah” in its Bahasa Malaysia publications.

Prime Minster Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday angrily denied the attacks was motivated by Umno and said no one should point fingers at his party.

Both Protestants and Catholics worship the same God.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police believe they have solved the Metro Tabernacle Church arson attack following the arrest of eight men.
The eight, aged between 21 and 26, including three siblings - two brothers and their uncle - were nabbed during a police operation that started on Tuesday. A police statement said the eight were Muslim Malays.
Federal Criminal Investigations Department director Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin said police got their break in the case when they arrested a 25-year-old man who went to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for his follow-up treatment for burns at 3pm on Tuesday.
“Upon questioning the man, we conducted an operation where we arrested seven more men including another man who also had burns on his hand.
“All eight have been ordered to be remanded with us for seven days to facilitate investigations,’’ he told a press conference at the City police headquarters here on Wednesday.
The church in Desa Melawati was among the Christian places of worship attacked on Jan 8. It was set on fire and the ground floor was completely gutted.
The attack is believed to be linked to the recent High Court ruling to allow the usage of the word ''Allah'' in the Catholic weekly Herald
Comm Mohd Bakri appealed to the public to allow the police time to carry out a thorough investigation into the Metro Tabernacle church arson.
He said they were investigating the case under Section 436 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum of 20 years imprisonment upon conviction.

Most believers of both camps dont realise their scriptures are flawed becos they come into the religion with a sweet story (christian) or indoctrinated since young (muslim). They dont even question the very fact that the jews wrote it and is final.

If The creator wanted to tell another story (christian) or rewrite them (koran), good try guys but some of the smarter one already knew, God The Almighty Himself would have to come done and settle it. Why? Because if you ever bother to read the scriptures, it is His style to do things. Hands On.

KUALA LUMPUR - A CLERIC says two severed heads of pigs - considered unclean by devout Muslims - have been found at a mosque following a spate of firebomb attacks on churches.
The incident on Wednesday is the latest to hit a place of worship amid a worsening dispute in recent weeks over the use of the word 'Allah' by Christians.
Hazelaihi Abdullah, the top official at a suburb mosque in central Selangor state, says people who went to his mosque to perform morning prayers on Wednesday were shocked to find two pig heads in the mosque compound.
Mr Hazelaihi says he was informed that pig heads also were found at another mosque nearby. However, Selangor Police Chief Khalid Abu Bakar says he could only confirm the incident at Mr Hazelaihi's mosque. -- AP

Most UMNO Muslims are murtad and bah kut teh lovers and are Muslims celup except for their sanctimonious displays when they suit them and this sandiwara was staged by them and has all the hallmarks of trying to play up the people's feeling but they failed this time because people are more informed than ever and more than half the Malays are not even with them anymore.

You will die this time UMNO because once the gravy train is derailed, even your utmost supporters will be deserting you like rats on a sinking ship. Your Titanic hit the icebergs that are called the decent people's consciences and you are worth nothing now except sinking into the abyss with all your kleptomaniacs and your ketuanan policies.

The people wanted more good governance policy but you failed again to read the people's minds as usual and embarked on this childish's prank. You are too PIG HEADED to think that people will be easily swayed by all these repugnant self inflicted acts of fire bombing of chuches and mosques and other places of worship.
