Wah that thing flies!

AP) BEIJING (AP) - China's prototype stealth fighter made its first-known test flight Tuesday, marking dramatic progress in the country's efforts to develop cutting-edge military technologies.

The plane dubbed the J-20 flew for about 15 minutes over an airfield in the southwestern city of Chengdu where it was spotted carrying out runway tests last week, Kanwa Asian Defense magazine editor Andrei Chang said.

Photos of the plane in flight and on the ground surrounded by men in civilian clothes and army overcoats were also posted on unofficial Chinese military websites. A J-10 fighter - China's last homegrown jet - flew behind it as a chase plane.

The test flight comes on the second day of a visit to China by U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and the normally secretive military has made no attempt to hide it or remove photos and reports about the J-20 from the Internet.

The timing and hands-off approach is apparently intended to send the message that Beijing is responding to calls from the U.S. and others to be more transparent about its defense modernization and future intentions.

Although likely many years from entering China's inventory, the J-20 is a potential rival to the U.S. F-22 Raptor, the only stealth fighter currently in service. The U.S. is also employing stealth technology on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, while Russia's Sukhoi T-50's stealth fighter made its maiden flight last year and is set to enter service in about four years.

While a state newspaper reported last week on the plane's appearance, China's government and military have yet to comment officially. People who answered phones at government and Communist Party offices in Chengdu, as well as the plane's developer - the Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Group - all refused to comment.

It's a bird, its a plane...wait it's supposed to be a stealth fighter, we are not supposed to see it on the radar screen and in the sky

Its so stealthty that other countries pretend not to see it flying because they won't believe it will ever hit any targets.

Either that or all the switches in the cockpit that are Made in China will break off and fail.

Hahahahaha

Obviously not in stealth mode since landing gear is down. BUT I am pretty surprised that the thing flies. That means the flight control systems are working. These things need a computer to make it fly.

What is reported to be a Chinese stealth fighter, is seen in Chengdu, Sichuan province, January 5, 2011. The U.S. military believes the aircraft is a J-20 stealth fighter prototype. The picture was supplied by Kyodo news agency on January 6, 2011.

Two U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor stealth jet fighters fly near Andersen Air Force Base in this handout photo dated August 4, 2010. China is still years away from being able to field a stealth aircraft, despite the disclosure of images indicating that it appears to have a working prototype, Pentagon officials said on Wednesday. A U.S. intelligence official estimated in May that the J-20 could rival the F-22 Raptor within eight years. The Raptor is the premier U.S. fighter, with cutting-edge "fifth-generation" features, including shapes, materials and propulsion systems designed to make it appear as small as a swallow on enemy radar screens.

Postnews - as usual, great pictures.

I wonder if this J20 is powered by Chinese made jet engines. That is another technology that Beijing is seeking to develop.

Seems like a pretty large plane. Maybe it has a role as a bomber. Once they have a flying example, they can fine tune the stealth capabilities.

This is deliberately and well timed to show-off to this arrogant Ang Moh US defense minister Gates who looked down on PRC technology by claiming previously that PRC will NEVER have 4th gen warplanes until year 2020. How the Chinese timed the flight test to take off the ground as he just landed on Chinese soil. He is there to receive this humiliating lesson from the Chinese.

Maybe the radar they using are fake ones ?

No wonder they think is in stealth mode and cannot be seen on their radars.

So, similar to the King' new cloths, in terms of political correctness,
do we say we can't see it or we can see it ?

An undated picture circulating on the internet and obtained by Kyoto news agency on January 12, 2010, shows what is reported to be a Chinese J-20 stealth fighter in flight in Chengdu, Sichuan province. China confirmed it held its first test-flight of a stealth fighter jet on Tuesday, a show of muscle during a visit by U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates aimed at defusing military tensions between the two big powers.

Its a MiG 1.44 rip off.. almost same shape except for front made to look like F-22.

No prize for guessing they bought the blueprint from MiG after the 1.44 was shelved by the Russkies; same case as for the J-10 aka Israeli Lavi..

Engines most likely Russian, as the Chinks still not yet mastered engine building..

Fake Chink copy-cats as always... :oIo:

Regardless of where they got the design they built a flying stealth jet with basic stealth features. Futhermore, it appears that the prototype that did the test flight did so with Chinese built jet engine!

The Chinese have a long way to go but from here on it is refining and improving the working design. It is a huge leap in technology for a 3rd world nation. Just the computers to control the flight is no joke.

Most stealth designs have similar shapes. Mig 1.44 has delta wing with canard but that is not a stealth jet. Look at the intake, tail

we managed to land a E2C safely without lowering the landing gears...
not because of any defect but because our bestest pilots forgot to do so...
