but but ur paper say it is a gift leh...

This was what I read

SINGAPORE - China will send two pandas to Singapore to mark next year's 20th anniversary of bilateral relations, the city-state's zoo operator said Wednesday.

The announcement was made Wednesday evening by President Hu Jintao during a meeting with Singapore President S. R. Nathan, Wildlife Reserves Singapore said in a statement.

It said the pandas, a male and female, would arrive in 2011 - a year after the 20th anniversary - and be housed at River Safari, a new attraction being built.

They will be loaned to Singapore for 10 years, a spokeswoman for the zoo operator told AFP.

Preliminary work for River Safari has begun and construction is due to be completed by mid-2011. Visitors will be able to see the pandas when River Safari opens its doors in early 2012.

China has used panda diplomacy worldwide since the days of the Cold War, most famously when it helped cement a rapprochement with the United States in the early 1970s by sending a pair of the animals.

More recently, it sent a pair of pandas to Taiwan late last year amid a thaw in relations between mainland China and the self-ruled island, which split in 1949 at the end of a civil war.

China normally demands enormous fees for its pandas.

The statement said the panda enclosure in hot and humid Singapore would be climate-controlled to approximate the cooler climes of mountainous southwestern China, the animals' natural habitat.

What can Singapore give in return?

China will give Singapore two giant pandas to mark 20 years of friendly ties between the two countries, Chinese President Hu Jintao said on Wednesday.

Hu arrived in Singapore on Wednesday for an annual summit of Asia-Pacific leaders, after visiting Malaysia where he made the first official visit of a Chinese leader in 15 years and signed several agreements on trade and investment.

After reviewing an honour guard upon arrival, Hu met Singapore President S.R. Nathan and the city-state's founding father, Minister Mentor Lee Kwan Yew.

Lee recently caused a ruffle among Chinese netizens when he called for the United States to remain engaged in Asia as a balance to China.

The gift of pandas, a popular attraction at zoos around the world, is often used by China as a diplomatic tool. China earlier this year gave two pandas -- Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, whose names said together mean reunification -- to Taiwan, which it regards as a renegade province, as a sign of warming relations.

The pandas, a male and a female, will arrive in the second half of 2011 and be housed at Singapore's new River Safari, according to Wildlife Reserves Singapore, the country's zoo operator.

So it is a loan rather than a gift. Eventually after 10 years assuming the pandas are still alive, they'll be returned to China. Gift is for VIP countries (USA & Taiwan); loan is for 2nd tier country! Why can't they be generous and make it permanent!

The reason why I LOAN instead GIFT the pandas to spore?
Well, this is a hint to my dear chinamen(tong Zhi) who work as FT in spore.
That we the citizen of PRC are only lending our manpower to spore, ultimately in 10 years time or more, after feeding ourselves rich
and producing our offspring to root in spore, we will return to where we came from.

The true home of the Panda is China, not spore.

Maybe they don't trust Spore

If the "give" to Spore, there is no guarantee that PAP won't neglect or sell the pandas

After all Spore is not a true country just some company named Spore Inc

I think we've fallen into china trap, what happen if the pandas die, that give china a good reason to blame us for not taken good care of their national pet and mount attack on sinkapore.
I rather they loan more mei mei to us.

Depend on how the pandas turn out at 10 years time. Either China had got a goondu to pay and maintain (need 8,000 sq m of land to grow bambo shoot, specialist caretakers, special enclosure, etc ??) the 2 pandas for 10 years, until their mature and China take them back for breeding; or, the pandas (touchwood) would have passed on while in Singapore.

If 2nd scenario came real, not to worry, we can give China our 'prized' Merlion if China is stupid enough to take it. Good riddance for something so ridiculous to represent Singapore.

<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->AFTER reading yesterday's report, 'China sending two pandas to Singapore', I would like to thank Chinese President Hu Jintao and the Chinese government and its people for the two wonderful gifts of VIPs (Very Important Pandas).
Singapore is indeed honoured to receive such VIPs because pandas are China's national treasures.
I am a nature and animal lover and it is a dream come true that Singapore will receive the two VIPs by 2011.
I believe many in Singapore will look forward to visiting the two VIPs at the zoo when they arrive.
I also hope the two VIPs will produce baby pandas during their stay in Singapore, so as to help increase the population of pandas.
Last but not least, I would like to welcome President Hu to Singapore for the Apec 2009 meeting and wish him and all Chinese in China the best of health.
