China built Airliner...

It seems that the Chinese are pretty aggressive in aviation industry. It will most probably end up providing third world countries a cheaper alternative of airliners...

China names first jumbo jet C919, to take off in 8 years
BEIJING, March 6 (Xinhua)-- China has named its first home-made jumbo jet C919, which will take off in around eight years, its chief designer Wu Guanghui said on Friday.

"C represents China as well as COMAC, the abbreviation for Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd," said Wu, who is also the deputy general manager of COMAC, the manufacturer of C919.

"The name also reflects our determination to compete in the international market for jumbo jet. C919 comes after Airbus and Boeing, so you will have ABC in the aviation industry," said Wu, apolitical advisor who is here attending the annual session of 11thNational Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

The first 9 in the name implies forever in Chinese culture, while 19 means the first jumbo jet produced by China will have 190seats, he said.

Wu said that his company will choose suppliers of engines, airborne equipment, and materials through international bidding, and will encourage foreign suppliers to enter into partnership with Chinese manufacturers.

"We will choose foreign-manufactured products like engines at the beginning phase, but we will also independently do the research and manufacturing work at the same time," noted Wu.

The Shanghai-based COMAC was set up in May, 2008 after approval in early 2007 by the State Council, China's Cabinet. It has a registered capital of 19 billion yuan (2.78 billion U.S. dollars), with the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission as the biggest shareholder.

Wu said the jumbo jet project now involves 47 institutions from China and abroad, and that the preliminary general technical design plan and commercial feasibility study have been completed.

European Technology, Assembled in China!!!!

Airbus Opens Plant in China

First plant outside of Europe

Friday, September 26, 2008
By . Agence France-Presse

Airbus will take a major step towards the globalization of its production on Sunday with the opening of a new assembly line in the Chinese port of Tianjin. The plant is the firm's first outside of Europe and gives Airbus a foothold in a market hungry for new planes and hotly contested by its rival Boeing.

"Our goal is to produce four planes per month by 2011, but I wouldn't be surprised if we achieved this earlier," Airbus CEO Thomas Enders said recently.

The Tianjin plant was constructed 62 miles outside Beijing in a port city and is a carbon copy of Airbus' site in Hamburg, Germany, which assembles the A320 jet, the group's family of single-aisle airliners. Work began on the site in August, but the official opening was delayed so as not to clash with the Beijing Olympics.

Breaking into the huge Chinese market, where strong domestic growth has helped insulate the economy from the chaos on the world market, has been identified as key to keeping the European supplier competitive with Boeing. The American manufacturer has historically dominated in China, but Airbus has a growing market share and has stolen a march with the Tianjin plant. Boeing makes aircraft components in China but has no assembly lines outside the United States.

Nevertheless, Airbus' global expansion strategy has worried European unions, which fear the outsourcing of jobs to cheaper regions, and concerns have been raised about the transfer of high-technology knowhow to a strategic competitor. But these doubts are overblown, experts insist. Firstly, Tianjin is not designed to replace exports to Airbus' existing markets, but to supply China, which the firm estimates will soak up 2,800 planes over the next two decades, 11.6% of global demand. Secondly, the plant is an assembly line for components manufactured elsewhere, a process which represents only a small part of the work.

"Psychologically it seems important to see a plane roll off the production line, but the line represents only three to four percent of its total value," estimated one expert in the sector.

The new factory represents a powerful political gesture in a promising market, but does it create a risk that Airbus' cutting-edge engineering will be pirated by Chinese competitor. After all, in May the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (CACC) opened its doors. By 2020 it plans to be building a 150-seat airliner, a direct competitor to the A320, at a plant in Shanghai. Industry experts, however, are unconcerned. "Theoretically, by dismantling the components that are sent them with the wiring already attached, the Chinese could get access to technology they haven't yet mastered themselves," said aviation author Pierre Sparaco. "But, in principle, they could just as easily do that to an A320 already flying in their fleet," he added.

In any case the A320, which was launched in 1984, is no longer the most modern in Airbus' inventory, which now includes the A380 superjumbo and the future long-haul A350.

Tianjin's first order will be filled in the middle of next year, when regional carrier Sichuan Airlines will receive its A320. By 2011 the site will employ 600 people. For the moment, it hosts 100 Europeans and 290 Chinese, many of them trained by English-speaking German and French colleagues in Hamburg and Toulouse.

Dear GMS

China I am afraid is biting of more than they could have chewed. They could have created a Bombardier or an Embrear focusing on 70 to 150 seaters. They chose a 200 seater directly in competition with the A350 and the Dream liner, I am afraid that they will not succeed very well but would create an airliner no one would buy. Designing and building it is one thing, getting airlines to buy it is another, will end up just like the Russian IL-96

they already got 90 orders for this...our ST group can only repair engines of planes like this..

Dear Tee

Thats for a regional jet like Embraer....I see a case for a regional jet, I do not see a case for a jumbo jet.

Dear Locke,

Don't underestimate the Chinese in the Aviation Industry.

They could send satellites up to space with more precision and their successful rate is even higher than the Europeans. And they have successfully sent astronauts up to Moon.

I have seen their MRT system in Shenzhen. Although in terms of design outlook they may have to improve on it but reliability wise, pretty impressive.

there are demands for high capacity airliners, Airbus couldn't keep up with the productions, that's why they build a plant in China. now they produce A320....later A380..etc...

This is News to me! So far, China had sent a monkey, a dog , a rabbit, snails and six men into orbit around the Earth! As for the moon, they do have one circumlunar satellite in orbit.

Ok, if you are so particular about that, they have sent astronauts to go round the moon.. while "TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCED" Japan and Korea could not even get their satellites into orbits properly.

Allo Ah Goh,

You seemed pretty hard on "Technological Advanced" Japan and Korea in their space endeavours viz China. BUT, it's an indisputable fact ze Chinese efforts are mainly cut-n-pastes from the Russians. Even the re-entry vehicle is the vintage type! Also, the Chinese have been in the rocket game much much earlier than Jap and Kimchi due to different priorities. So, the compare is not useful. Let's see 10 yrs down the road what happens. If you're unfortunately not around then, I can burn the outcomes to you. BUT, I'll bet my shirt and underwear that Japan will surpass China in this regard. You're most welcome to accept my bet. Want?

One of the world's most successful airliner, the Boeing 737. How many crashes resulting in at least one fatality? More than 60!

What is the most critical technology in the construction of an airliner? The wings!
