The original Russian-made Su-27 (Sukhoi 27).

China's version, the J-11.

It started some 30 years ago with fake Levi's jeans and Versace bags. Then the market became more sophisticated, with faux iPhones on the racks. Now, the Chinese counterfeit goods trade has gone even further, with the production of identical copies of Russian-designed fighter planes.

In 1996, the Chinese government acquired a license to manufacture 200 Su-27 (Sukhoi 27) fighter jets at the Shenyang aircraft factory in northeast China. The planes were supposed to be used by the Chinese air force under the name J-11. But in 2004, after reeling 95 planes off the assembly line, the Chinese authorities suddenly cancelled the contract, listing various faults with the design of the jet. However, in 2007 China started to manufacture a new plane, of "Chinese design", which they named the J-11B. Not surprisingly, it was almost an identical copy of the Su-27, except for the addition of Chinese-produced engines, radars and dashboards.

The Chinese model is much cheaper than the Russian original, and Russia has been quick to note that China hopes to sell it to countries usually supplied by Moscow. The Russian authorities plan to sue for counterfeit theft, but, according to our Observer, Rick Fisher, who specializes in military issues, they have little chance of getting their voices heard.

It's unlikely that Russia will launch a legal dispute, and even if it did, it would not likely succeed in stopping China's plans or winning compensation. China's political clout in Moscow is very strong, perhaps even strong enough to persuade the Russian government against moving ahead with formal legal action. In the past when China had been caught trying to steal weapons, like the Bumblebee rocket launcher, they made the surprising decision to pay for the weapon. However, the Sukhoi-Shenyang fighter is far larger and much more expensive.
The J-11B is made to use several of the Su-27/ J-11's components along with the new Chinese-made parts. The Chinese air force values the Russian design, preferring it to their own Chengdu J-10. In 2003, a Russian source told me that he fully expects China to market their "indigenised" Sukhoi aircraft once they succeed in putting it into production.

Will it be competitive? In some respects, yes. My analysis is that it might be as effective as recent, modified Su-27s, the J-11B/Su-30 attacker series. But Russia is not standing still - and its new Su-35 features more powerful engines and an even better radar system. However, for the price, some countries may view the J-11B and J-11BS as a better deal.

It's hard to say where the J-11B currently is in its development cycle. Prototypes have been tested, and the WS-10A — a perhaps even more important accomplishment for China — is in final stages of design, or perhaps even initial production. But right now, the J-11B is not ready for the Chinese Air Force, much less ready for foreign sales. By 2010 or shortly thereafter, however, it could be ready for the Chinese market. And once it has proven itself in the Chinese service for several years, it will likely be on offer for foreign trade

China copies Su-27 fighter, may compete with Russia - paper

12:3521/02/2008
MOSCOW, February 21 (RIA Novosti) - China has built a domestic copy of the famed Su-27 Flanker fighter and may compete with Russia on third-party markets if it sets up the full-scale production of the plane, a Russian daily said on Thursday.
China has acquired 76 Su-27SK fighters from Russia since 1992, and bought a license for production of another 200 planes in 1995, in a deal worth $2.5 billion.

"Since 1996, the domestic version of the Su-27 aircraft, dubbed J-11, has been produced at the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) with the use of Russian components," the Vedomosti newspaper said.

The licensed production of the Su-27 has given China its most capable fighter aircraft while also providing a vehicle for its industry to gain knowledge of third-generation fighter manufacturing, Vedomosti said.

About 95 aircraft had been produced in China by 2003. However, the 1995 agreement did not include the transfer of avionics and AL-31F turbofan engine technology, and the Chinese manufacturers had to rely on the Russian supply of these systems.

In 2004, China requested that Russia's Sukhoi aircraft manufacturer stop deliveries of the assembly kits, stating that the basic variant of the Su-27SK/J-11 fighter could no longer satisfy Chinese Air Force requirements.

But the Russian sources insist that China's decision was prompted by an increased share of domestic components in the assembly of the licensed aircraft and breakthroughs in engine manufacturing technology.

"The breakthrough in engine manufacturing technology allowed China to increase its share of domestically developed components and technologies from 70-75% to over 90%," the newspaper cited an official from the Russian state-controlled arms exporter, Rosoboronexport, as saying.

In 2006, China revealed first official details about the domestically developed WS-10A Tai Hang turbofan engine, similar to the Russian AL-31F engine in both technology and performance.

China announced that the engine had been successfully tested on a modified Su-27K fighter, but Russian experts believe it is not reliable enough to start the full-scale production of the aircraft.

Rosoboronexport and Chinese officials refused to comment on the latest developments in the situation regarding the licensed production of Su-27s in China.

Meanwhile, Konstantin Makiyenko from the Russian Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, believes that if China manages to launch a full-scale production of the indigenous copy of the Su-27, it would easily push Russia from third-party markets, and it would be difficult to prove a violation of the license agreement.

Su-27 Flanker an its variant, Su-30 Flanker C, constitute the bulk of Russia's arms exports. Last year, Sukhoi exported 50 of these aircraft, accounting for 50% of Rosoboronexport's export revenues, Vedomosti said.

The newspaper also noted that China had a long history of copying Russian aircraft. Chinese J-6 and J-7 fighters were modeled after MiG-19 Farmer and MiG-21 Fishbed, H-6 bomber - after Tu-16 Badger, and Y-5, Y-7 and Y-8 transport planes - after An-2 Colt, An-24 Coke and An-12 Cub, respectively.

Even a cheap copy can kill. Though it may kill some chinese pilots pilots

Looking at how expensive the newer US jets are, PAP may only be able to afford chinese jets.

the moral of the story is. dun do business with prc china, they have zero concept of intelligent property,

airbus building plane in china soon right, very soon, they will boot out the european and build complete copy cat airbus, and give funny name to it.
they will sell it to africa, and they can crash and die for all i care.

if they did a good copy, why do you think they will crash? does it mean there are flaws in the original designs?

or it could be due to simply poor maintenance by the Zulus?

correction, SU-27 have unique design, they did not copy from usa, which US plane look like SU-27 which was build before it? can you gave one name?

seriously a plane is a plane, how much drastic can the designs get?

unless it's a UFO design then it's a different ballgame all together..

has it occurred to you they have obtained the license from Russia to produce those planes...

if there are new designs coming up and evolved based on the knowledge they acquired from the russian planes, should they be accused of "copying"?

speaking from a person who know nuts about plane and aerodynamic.
they are different OK, each and every plane.

you must be joking man, in real war, rsaf are very trigger friendly, they will shoot any thing in the air with their missiles even before they can see it, basically J11Bs will be shot down by F-15sg before J11Bs can even shoot at us.

our F-15SG heavily modified with israelis electronics are the best 3rd generation fighters.

please lah, russian electronic and plane, can go and fly kite.

I tend to agree; RSAF pilots would most probably shoot also USAF and RAF aircrafts, maybe even SIA.

where got china man made good copy. the metal frame and parts are not just made of alloy, the production process that strength it, is a high tech process, which china still know nothing about. it may look the same to you, but it may break apart in the air when under combat stress.

basically dun buy china plane.

Chinks are talented people and if only 0.5% of population are fighter pilot calibre people they will have more pilots than they could produce fighter jets.
