A senior official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has been suspended over allegations of improper claims for expenses incurred during overseas visits.

Chief of protocol Lim Cheng Hoe was taken off all duties on Tuesday and is now under investigation by the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD).

Responding to a BT query, a ministry spokesman said: "MFA received information that former chief of protocol, Lim Cheng Hoe, has made improper claims for reimbursements, for expenses incurred by him, during some of his overseas visits.

Won't be surprised if this is internal "house-cleaning" in MFA under Shanmugam. Lim Cheng Hoe and his Protocol Directorate have been quite a separate breed from the rest for a while.

A senior Foreign Affairs official is being investigated for allegedly filing improper claims for expenses racked up during overseas visits.


Mr Lim Cheng Hoe, the Chief of protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) was suspended on Tuesday.


A report in The Business Times quoted an MFA spokesman who said Mr Lim made improper claims for reimbursements during some overseas trips.


According to The Straits Times, he has not been arrested.


The case has been referred to the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD).


Mr Micheal Tan Keng Siong will be the acting chief of protocol at the ministry.


Mr Lim spent 38 years in the civil service.
