SINGAPORE: Thousands turned up at Borders' massive clearance sale Friday morning.
The bookstore is clearing stock from its Wheelock premises and selling books from
50 per cent off. Bargain-hunters started lining up half an hour before the sale officially
started. Baskets for customers to place their books were snapped up quickly, and staff
resorted to giving out cardboard boxes instead. Some buyers even brought along their
own trolleys. The sale exceeded Borders' expectations, as more cashiers had to be
brought in to cope with the crowd.
As for gift card holders, they would not be able to use them during this clearance sale.
Borders is hoping that the proceeds of the sale, as well as the company's total debt level,
will largely determine whether gift card holders will be reimbursed.
Borders is closing its flagship store at Wheelock Place because of a dispute with its landlord.
The Borders bookstore chain is currently in talks with parties who are interested in buying
the company's only existing store, at Parkway Parade.
Some of Borders' staff have been transferred to the Parkway Parade outlet.
Mr Tim Reid, interim judicial manager of Borders, said: "The best thing that could possibly
happen is that we are able to sell Parkway Parade (Borders store) to a party that can take
all the staff that wish to carry on in a similar industry. That is clearly very high on my agenda."

It really time for Wheel lock holdings to kick borders out. Bookshop are out of sync with rapidly increasing rental. Wheelock holdings can cut up the place and rent the
retail place to high end boutiques brand names. It just a matter of time before borders is gone.

Books trade is basically a dying trade in Singapore, unless you are international brand names. Pearson Education ......Publishing your own materials....

In most countries, there is no tax on knowledge.

Only in Singapore are books/knowledge materials taxed. But then again, only in Singapore is there a tax on a tax.
