Number of households on Public Assistance Scheme has been stable
Posted: 09 January 2012
SINGAPORE : Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Chan Chun Sing, has said the number of households on the Public Assistance Scheme has been fairly stable over the past few years.
The scheme is a long-term assistance programme, targeted to help the most needy in Singapore.
To date, it aids 3,000 households, a slight 2 per cent increase from last year's figures.
In response to MP Lily Neo's query on whether the eligibility of the scheme could be extended to include those with long-term needs, Mr Chan said the criteria is constantly being assessed.
He said: "My assurance to all members of this House is that if you find somebody who needs help in any way, form or manner, if it does not fit into any of our schemes at any point in time, let us know because that might be a reason for us to review the scheme, or it might also require us to be more creative in finding other ways to help our fellow Singaporeans."
