Disgust after young victims of Tampines accident mocked and gory pictures circulated online

While the nation grieves over the tragic loss of two young lives in the Tampines accident on Monday, netizens are unified in their disgust over Internet insensitivity.

The targets of their ire: The circulation of gory pictures of the victims and distasteful comments about them.

The pictures of the dead brothers lying on the road spread on Twitter soon after the accident. They have since stopped spreading, but can still be found online.

A few hours later, a secondary school student added fuel to the fire by mocking the Tampines victims online.

In response to a friend’s post on Twitter about the accident, the boy made fun of a victim’s fatal head injuries.

The boy later sent a message to his friend to help him apologise online but netizens were outraged by then.

Errant drivers could face harsher penalties

SINGAPORE: Second Minister for Home Affairs S Iswaran said there are some possible areas that the authorities are looking into -- errant drivers could face harsher penalties, while more speed cameras will be installed and more Traffic Police officers will be deployed to make the roads safer.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a visit to the Police Security Command on Thursday, Mr Iswaran highlighted concerns such as speeding and beating the red light.

He said the authorities will step up road safety in areas that are more prone to accidents and better protect road users, such as young and elderly pedestrians.

Mr Iswaran said besides enforcement and penalties, road users have to be educated.

His comments came on the heels of an accident in Tampines on Monday, when two boys died after they were hit by a cement mixer.

Asked about a suggestion by Tampines GRC MP Baey Yam Keng to re-route heavy vehicles in residential estates, Mr Iswaran said it is not possible to completely avoid having heavy vehicles going through residential areas.

He said heavy vehicle drivers have to understand their responsibilities because the accidents they could be involved in have severe consequences.

Some 600 friends, relatives and strangers turned up on Thursday afternoon to say their final good-bye to the two brothers who were killed in a horrific accident in Tampines on Monday.

As gospel music played, the coffins of Nigel Yap, 13, and his seven-year-old brother Donavan were carried out of the void deck of the family's Tampines Street 44 home into two hearses.

Following behind were their parents, Mr Francis Yap, 39, Madam Suliani Ang, 38, relatives, neighbours, friends and well-wishers.

They had earlier attended a 15-minute service where two pastors led the crowd in singing hymns and saying their last prayers.

The entourage is headed to Mandai Crematorium which will be the two brothers' final resting place.

The boys were killed when their bicycle was hit by a cement mixer truck at the junction of Tampines Avenue 9 and Tampines Street 45 on Monday evening.

The driver is currently out on bail and his licence has been suspended.

Mother of Tampines accident victims will donate their CNY clothes to charity

SINGAPORE - The parents of Nigel and Donovan Yap, who were killed in the tragic traffic accident in Tampines on Monday, say they will be donating the boys' brand new clothes.

The clothes were bought in preparation for the Lunar New Year, and it will be a waste to throw them away, said the boys' mother, Madam Suliani Ang, 38.

Nigel, 13, and Donovan, 7, were killed when the bicycle they were on was hit by a cement mixer at a junction.

In an interview with the Shin Min Daily News, Madam Ang said the donation would in a way, be a way to do good on behalf of the boys and "allow their love to spread in this world".

"We'll use our sons' love to love others, and give back to society," said Madam Ang.

She discussed it with her husband, Mr Francis Yap, 39, before coming to the decision. The couple will also be donating clothes that the boys have never worn before to charity.

But Madam Ang says she intends to keep the boys' school uniforms as well as their favourite outfits for rememberance.

The couple told the Chinese evening daily that they are still trying to cope with their loss, and will require some time to adjust.

They also thanked their employers for being understanding during this trying time. Mr Yap revealed that his boss asked him to not to worry about work, but to focus on taking care of his wife and wait until their emotions have settled.

Won't be moving

Despite advice from relatives to move out of their home and away from the "bad memories", Madam Ang says she intends to stay as she will miss the place where the boys grew up.

But Madam Ang admits that seeing the boys' belongings around the house makes her sad, but said she will get round to packing them up one day.

Tampines accident: Parents touched by handwritten note from President

SINGAPORE - President Tony Tan sent a handwritten letter to the parents of the 2 boys who were killed in Monday's accident in Tampines, offering his condolences.

He wrote that he was "deeply saddened" to hear of the accident while he was overseas.

"My wife and I wish to convey our heartfelt condolences for your sudden loss. Our prayers are with you during this difficult moment," wrote President Tan.

The parents of Nigel and Donovan Yap, Mr Francips Yap and Madam Suliani Ang, said they were very touched and surprised to receive the letter on Thursday.

The letter was hand-delivered to their doorstep in the evening.

Said Mr Yap: "We're nobodies, yet the President and other MPs have all shown their care and concern for us, we really appreciate it."

Ministers from Tampines GRC, including Education Minister Heng Swee Kiat, Senior Minister of State Mr Masagos and member of parliament Mr Baey Yam Keng had attended the wake, the Shin Min Daily News reported.

Madam Ang revealed this morning they also received a consolatory message from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. His secretary was at the wake and transmitted the PM's message to them.

The couple once again expressed their gratitude for the support and encouragement shown by Singaporeans from all walks of life during this time.

Nearly 1,000 people turned up at the funeral yesterday to bid a final farewell to Nigel, 13, and Donovan, 7.
