About 500 donors with type O blood are needed to bring Singapore’s stock of the blood up to a healthy level, said the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) and the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) on Friday (28 September).
“As of today, the national blood stock level for ‘O’ blood is about half of the required stockpile. SRC and HSA aim to have at least six days’ supply to meet daily transfusion needs and bleeding emergencies in Singapore,” said the two agencies in a joint statement.
Being a universal blood group, type O blood is required for all patients during emergency situations when their blood groups are not known. Nearly half of these patients can only receive group O blood.
All healthy individuals with type O blood who are aged between 16 and 60 years and weighing at least 45 kg, are therefore urged to donate blood over the next two weeks. Those who have not made a donation in the past 12 weeks are also encouraged to come forward.
They can do so at Bloodbank@HSA, Bloodbank@Dhoby Ghaut, Bloodbank@Woodlands and Bloodbank@Westgate Tower.
Donors must bring their NRIC or passport. Those who have not donated blood before in Singapore can find more information here.
