FairPrice to absorb GST increase on 500 items for first half of 2024

FairPrice Group will also extend its discount schemes for seniors to Dec 31, 2024.

SINGAPORE (27 Nov 2023): FairPrice Group will absorb the 1 percentage point increase in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on 500 essential items for the first six months of 2024.

GST will be increased to 9 per cent next year.

The basket of 500 essential items includes household essentials that are most in need and purchased by customers frequently, said FairPrice Group on Monday (Nov 27).

They comprise groceries such as fresh fruits, vegetables and meat, staples, dairy, paper products, detergents and household cleaners.

The initiative will apply across all FairPrice supermarket outlets and online.

The group will also extend its discount schemes for members of the Pioneer Generation, Merdeka Generation, and Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS) Blue card holders to Dec 31, 2024.

Eligible customers can present their membership cards at cashiers. They should select the relevant discount options at self-checkout counters.

Pioneer Generation refers to those who were born on or before Dec 31, 1949, and became Singapore citizens on or before Dec 31, 1986.

Merdeka Generation seniors include those born between Jan 1, 1950, and Dec 31, 1959, and became Singapore citizens on or before Dec 31, 1996.

These discounts are valid for up to S$200 (US$149) per transaction per day, said FairPrice Group.

It added that these initiatives will assist people "amid stubborn inflation and the resulting unprecedented rise in the cost of living".

Singapore's core inflation had risen to 5.5 per cent in January and February this year, a 14-year high, before trending downwards. Core inflation came in at 3.3 per cent in October.

FairPrice Group had previously provided discounts during GST adjustments.

It did so during the introduction of the 3 per cent GST in 1994, the GST increase from 5 per cent to 7 per cent in 2007, and the recent increase from 7 per cent to 8 per cent this year.

Group CEO Vipul Chawla said: "Despite significant inflationary pressures, FairPrice Group remains steadfast in our commitment to alleviate the rising cost of daily essentials, particularly for the more vulnerable among us.

"It is clear that in the current economic environment, our customers are watching their spending more than ever.

"FairPrice Group will continue to work hard to help all in Singapore make every dollar count so as to maintain their quality of life and feed their families well."

Also 4.95 round up to 5 dollars because cashier says we don’t accept 5 cents

NTUC and CECA ceo are very kind, they will also import meats and bread from India, Bangladesh to lower our cost of living.

Tiagong meat from India and Bangladesh are very cheap and quality is very good

Tiagong CEO Vipul Chawla indeed knows
the value of 5 cents in SG...

.

Patiently translating complex titles such as Gor Jiam Dua Ge Gu Chia Lian,

Tiagong , market ah sohs say while the literal translation for the phrase in this work is: "Five-cent coin is bigger than an ox cart wheel",

the rhyme is actually "a sarcastic remark for someone who did a small favour and is asking for a huge compensation in return ..

1% GST absorption for a very limited number of products say until like gave u a goose that lays golden eggs. Please la.... the plastic bag surcharge of 10 cents for every single customer more than makes up for it. In many cases, people have to pay for 2-3 bags on average.

No need to absorb the pathetic 1% GST.

Just do your basic duty as chief of NTUC FairPrice by selling your goods at a reasonable price.
Do you know that your goods are sold at generally higher than Sheng Siong and ABC outlets. So, what us 1% absorption?
