Well ROC is now the standard bearer and in 69 years its culture will recolonize the mainland after reunification, leading to another golden era in Chinese civilization.

Chinese civilization is always larger than its borders or government in power. Today you might include the diaspora and Chinatowns worldwide as extensions of the the civilization.

Anyway the CCP is more adaptable than we give them credit for. The leaders recognize this ideological vacumm which 'market socialism with Chinese characteristics' cannot fill (hence rampant corruption and greed and every man for himself). People need spiritual sustenance, meaning in life.

Hence after the heinous excesses of the Cultural Revolution and the lost generation after opening up, there's been an unspoken graduated backtrack on many aspects of policy on religion, traditional customs and the arts. The OOB markers, like in Singapore, are vague and keep shifting, but as long as you don't threaten the Party, you're ok. Grow too big and start critiquing the government, like the Falungong, and you're screwed.

no longer up to date as children grow up and move to big cities. those rural towns and villages holding anncestry records are as good as dead. for example, my family’s original walled compound in southern china is overrun by squatters and strangers. the next door neighbor’s compound is still intact as the inheritor or beneficiary paid off $1m to the local official to chase squatters out and secure the compound from being bulldozed for building of condos. that neighbor spent another $1m to restore the compound to its old tang era glory - walled extended-family compound with various chambers, gardens, courtyards, meeting halls, and layers of doorways and gates.

It was said the manchus were even more brutal than mongols in their battle for supremacy in the grassland. Manchus decimated mongol/ uighyrs/tibet influence all the way to current Afghanistan. It could be manchus who destroyed the Buddhist and not Muslims who came later. But need more research on this.

The Mongols are Tibetan Buddhists.
