I am currently based in the UK as a postgrad student and have bought SQ tickets for LONDON-SINGAPORE-LONDON from the SQ website here. The lowest fare I pay is about £600 (about S$1300) or slightly less, compared to sometimes S$2500 I pay when I travel by SQ on the SINGAPORE-LONDON-SINGAPORE flight. It's tempting to infer that Singaporeans are often subsiding the airfare of other customers overseas!
Having said that, I think SQ does provide very good inflight service, but to have to pay a few hundred dollars more to enjoy that, maybe I'll pick a more economical airline over SQ when I travel from Singapore to the UK. Also, while other airlines are slightly more lenient with baggage allowance (I'm allowed up to 35 kg if i specify I'm a student who has to carry back books to SG) as I get an approval quite readily from other airlines, provided I show my student ID and the email correspondence, in SG, when I exceed by 2 kgs because of the heavy books in my luggage, I'm told I have to pay excess baggage charges.
