<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->BEING a new citizen carries with it new responsibilities to community and country, Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean reminded a group of 250 new Singaporeans who received their pink identity cards at a ceremony yesterday at the Sengkang Community Club.
Mr Teo, who is also a Member of Parliament for Pasir-Punggol GRC, said new citizens should adopt the attitude of 'what they can do to help', rather than what the Government or the community can give them.
The minister urged new citizens to join their fellow Singaporeans in rallying to pull through these difficult economic times.
'Building a strong and close-knit community is a greater challenge during these difficult economic times,' he said. 'Our experience is that Singaporeans rally together during difficult times and help each other.'
The 250 who became new citizens yesterday were formerly from various countries, such as Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and India.
Among them was Mr Martin Cruzado, 35, and his wife and three children.
'Singapore is a beautiful place to raise our children. It is clean and secure and the Government takes care of its people,' said Mr Cruzado, an engineer who arrived here from Manila seven years ago. Mr Teo also encouraged new citizens to get involved in grassroots activities to better assimilate themselves. For those talented in certain areas, they should consider volunteering their time to teach others.
