what is the moral responsibility of the government? the smarter ones in the society? the more enlightened and more knowledgeable ones in our society ? do we allow those less intelligent and less educated ones to be led to the gallows? free will....free will my foot!

The fundamental problem with this lies in the fact "morals" are not universal. Each society, each ethnicity, each religion has their own set of standards.

If a govt is given free reign to impose moral values, your life is going to be extremely miserable for the simple reason that you're going to end up having to obey a moral code that has little resemblance to your own morality.

How would you like to live in a country where the govt chooses your spouse for you? After all, we all know that "free will" goes out the window when men start thinking with their dickheads. That's what LKY tried to do with his "graduate mother" policy and everybody was up in arms over the interference of the state in what is viewed as a fundamental right.
