An addict is someone who must do something even if it is doing him harm or he is suffering or making great losses from that activity.
You can't call an investor who makes billions of dollars investing an addict, can you?

Do Little Habits Keep Us From Better Lives?
Do Soft Addictions Keep Us From Our Life Goals?

Ela is an addict, but she's not the kind of addict you're used to hearing about. She's addicted to shoes.
"I have over 100 pairs of shoes — I have 118 pairs," the 38-year-old said in a video she made for Good Morning America. "And what I do is I scatter them so it doesn't look like I have a lot. So I can hide them from my husband. For me, I tend to buy shoes when I'm upset or when I want to feel better about myself."
Her mother dealt with bad days by buying shoes, too, she says. Ela, who doesn't want her last name used, has what has been dubbed a soft addiction: seemingly harmless habits that escalate into overwhelming obsessions — like shopping, exercising and beautifying.
If you zone out while watching TV, surf the Internet aimlessly, or follow every report on Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, you may have fallen prey to what life coach Judith Wright calls a soft addiction. And, yes, you need to get a life.
Wright, the author of There Must Be More Than This: Finding More Life, Love and Meaning By Overcoming Your Soft Addictions, says that "soft addictions" can be habits, compulsive behaviors, or recurring moods or thought patterns.
"Soft addictions are everyday activities, seemingly harmless habits, like overshopping or gossiping, that we use to numb our feelings, mute our consciousness and keep us from having greater satisfaction in life," Wright said. "We develop them because we're uncomfortable with being with ourselves and feeling our feelings. So we need to numb and distract ourselves."
They are the little things we do that satisfy some surface desire, but when you consider the time they take up, they keep us from achieving richer lives, robbing us of time that could be better spent improving our lives or building relationships.
Singles Are Scariest Cases
People of any age can develop soft addictions, but they are scariest when they occur in single people, Wright says.
"They fill their emptiness with over-working and then try to overcompensate by working out at the gym or getting a massage," she said. "So, it becomes this routine, mechanized life of work and recovery, work and recovery. This is the hamster on the wheel and they can't connect with other people. It looks like they're living a full life, but they're not."
In personal ads, people often advertise their soft addictions, by saying something like they like movies, she says.
A recent Harris poll of 1,010 people found that such activities are common, with 91 percent of respondents admitting to soft addictions. Nearly half, 48 percent, admit to procrastination as their No. 1 soft addiction. In the poll, 32 percent of women say they overeat, 23 percent of women admit to impulse shopping and 34 percent of women claim to watch too much television.

Addiction vs. Harmless Habit

Unlike the activities associated with obsessive-compulsive disorders, the activities do not rule your life. But they do leave a mark.
"If you're doing something and you're learning something and you're growing from it, then it's a passion," Wright said. However, if you're doing it and you're numbed by the experience, you're zoned out, feel distracted, buzzed, a little high and forgetful, then it's a soft addiction."
To differentiate between a soft addiction and normal behavior, consider your motivation, Wright says. Are you watching television to relax, or do you watch it to learn something, and expand your mind?
"People, let's say, will buy shoes and not remember what they bought," she said. "Or, if you're spending a lot of time surfing the Internet for a term paper, that's OK. But if you spend hours going in and out of chat rooms, that's a soft addiction."
If you are zoning out while you are doing it, the goal of your activity is numbness, and it's a problem. Other times, people do certain activities in order to avoid intense emotions that they don't know how to deal with, such as sadness or anger.
A 32-year-old librarian, Holly, the obsession is with coloring her hair. She colors her hair every six or seven months to match her clothes or buys clothes to match hair color It sounds like a harmless thing to do, but for her the reasons behind it are painful.
"Coloring my hair to match my clothing or buying clothes more specifically to match my hair color," she says. "And the reason I do it is to get attention. I don't feel as though I'm … enough so I do it so to be seen and to get noticed."
For Christina, a 51-year-old mom, her soft addiction is watching the same movies over and over again. She watches 10 hours on the weekends, and five or six hours during the week, falling asleep on the couch.
The habit began in high school, and at one point, she thought she might become a film critic. But now she realizes she uses the movies as comfort and to hide from her problems, instead of seeking comfort from her families.

"I have about five or six movies that I'd say I watch some of them over about 30 times," she said. "One I've watched at least 50 times. The thing that I want most is to feel connected to my husband and my daughter. I guess I feel a lot of regret that there are a lot of moments that I've missed hours and hours of my life, that I missed out on that I could have been closer to them."
Shedding Soft Addictions
All three women are on the road to healing by having attended soft addiction workshops given by Wright.
Her key pieces of advice: Assess your life, and use what she calls "the math of more" to enrich your life.
"Admit you have addictions, identify them and make a break with denial," Wright said. "You have to tell yourself the truth about your life and ask 'Am I going to fill my life with soft addictions, or am I going to have my life count and feel my feelings and not sleepwalk through life anymore?'"
Those with soft addictions should add more nourishing activities to their lives, and they will automatically subtract the addictive ones.
"Instead of buying shoes, call a friend and tell them what's in your heart instead of on your feet," Wright said. "If you are with your friends, you're less likely to sit in front of the TV watching re-runs of Friends."
Ela still buys shoes, but now will buy two pair instead of four at a time, realizing it's not the way to escape from her problems. She doesn't keep her shoes secret from her husband anymore. They talk things out and she's closer to him, she said.
Holly still dyes her hair, but is working to place more value on her inner worth, rather than what she looks like, she says.
Christina says she spends more time with her family, choosing a dinner date with her husband or a talk with her daughter over movies. She looks at the big picture of her life, and wants to like what she sees.
"I don't want to be on my deathbed and only have people saying about me, 'she spent a lot of time watching movies,'" Christina said.

Professional Gambling - The positives.
A list of good things about being a professional gambler.
You get to be your own boss: You work when you want to work and for how long you want to work. You take holidays when you feel like it, you control your destiny much more than someone in a normal job. You get out of the 9-5 rat race.

Indulge in watching as much sport as you like - It's your job!

The potential to make a lot of money, more than you ever could in any normal job.
Professional Gambling - The negatives.
Some of the bad things about becoming a professional gambler.
You are risking large amounts of money: This is not just your own money but in some cases your family's money.

Future job prospects are affected greatly. Your CV now has listed - "professional gambler" for x years. This is not what future potential employers like to see on someone's CV.

Society will react towards you in different ways. Some will have a fascination with your occupation, others (the majority) will look down upon you in disbelief, mistrust, pity or disgust. You will not be climbing any of society's social ladders with this occupation.

You will not be adding much value to society.

Many hours will be spent alone.

You will endure losing runs, these are emotionally draining for you and for others around you if you let it affect relationships.

There is a risk you may be addicted to gambling, this might only get worse if you are doing it all the time and can be exaggerated if you begin to lose.

Professional gamblers work very very hard to maintain their edge. There is not a lot of glamour to the profession

Many people who turn professional gamblers lose in the end and have to give up. This is usually because they are not ready to do it. Either their edge doesn't really exist - they have been lucky in the past, or they didn't wait long enough to build up enough financial stability before becoming a professional.

You will need a lot of money saved before you turn professional. Normally this is much more than people are willing to admit they need. Make sure you have enough for a years salary - this should be untouched by gambling. On top of this make sure you have enough for the rest of your family for a year or more. The on top of this you will need money to use for capital, only a small % of which will be risked per bet. Most pros make high 5 figure amounts or 6 figure amounts before they turned professional. This amount will ensure you steer clear of pressure to make money.

Please consider wisely your decision, there are many negatives, with not that many positives. The positives that exist are very attractive to most people, but are they really worth it..

Do you guys really believe you can win money by following some trend, progression or money management rules?

Looking at baccarat game itself, of course the dealer has an advantage because of the house advantage.

However, punter can have the free choice to place stakes and betting position thus putting the dealer into a disadvantage.

Theoreticlly, looking at the above 2 points, the players should have an overall advantage. Unfortunately, we continue to lose and this is because of our human weaknesses. So if one can overcome his own "human weaknesses", he should be able to beat the casinos. Not easy!

Play S$10/- per hand and please use Martigale system...

i made S$170/- today at Long Jie

The problem with semi-martingale is that one can win continuosly for several days, however, there will definately be once when u will be caught in a losing dragon and all your winnings will be wipe out.

Yes, this is exactly why it doesn't work. Have you heard of any professional gamblers using some kind of betting system and being able to make a living of it?

This is simply not true. No matter how you change your stakes or betting style or way, the casino still has the advantage. That is how the casino makes money. The human weakness here is gamblers thinking that they can get the advantage or somehow win

Let me show an illustration to show the powers of player having an advantage over the dealer, because player have the advantage of decision making.

Assuming that there is no table limit, using the martingale, the dealer will surely lose and this is because the player have the choice of stakes and betting position.

This is only in assumption that the casino has no betting limits and that you have an infinite bankroll. But then, the wizard of odds seem to think otherwise....

I disagree with your answer about using the Martingale with an infinite bankroll (May 22, 2004 column). If I had an infinite amount of money and time, and the casino would take any bet, then could I ensure a profit by playing the Martingale (doubling after every loss until I win) on a fair bet on the toss of a coin? The question writer proposes a random walk on a fair bet. The expected value is indeed zero, as you say. But the probability of ever being ahead is 1, as long as you are willing to quit after being ahead some finite amount. The probability of eventually achieving that finite amount with an infinite bankroll and infinite time is 1.... for ANY finite level of winnings. Even if the game is unfair, infinite bankrolls can ensure that eventually you can receive a positive result... and then quit. Pick a level of winning you want... $1 million. Bet a million. If you lose, bet $2 million. If you lose again bet $4 million. In an infinite number of flips, even with the game as unfair as you like, you will eventually win. Take your $1 million and go home. Come back tomorrow and repeat. - Jonathan Falk, actuary

I had a feeling one of my fellow actuaries might disagree with me on this one but I stand by my answer. I see this as a question of expected value rather than probability. The writer used the word "ensure", which is related to the word insurance. An insurance policy would have a fair cost of 1, which is simply the product of the probability (1/2infinity) and amount covered (2infinity). As I said in my original reply, 2infinity/2infinity = 1. So the player would give up his one unit win to pay for the insurance policy. You might argue that the insurance company would never have to pay because they could claim an infinite number of flips have not occurred yet, but I'm assuming a timeless quality in the question. If we did consider time I would be even more right because the player would never live long enough to play an infinite number of flips, and any finite number of losses is definitely possible. No. Some might argue that it would take an infinite number of losses to lose in this situation, which would be impossible. The truth is that 0.5infinity approaches 0 but does not equal zero. If this did happen you would lose $2infinity. The expected return of this strategy is thus 1- $2infinity * 0.5infinity = $1 - 1 = 0. Another more graceful way to look at is that as your bankroll increases the expected value still remains unchanged at zero. So the limit of the expected value as the bankroll approaches infinity is zero. In other words an increasing bankroll doesn't help your odds, even if it goes to infinity. May 22, 2004

Playing the half-martingale blindly, continuously, will surely lose. I have a close personal married friend who live through gambling, hes like this for about 8yrs, he never work, almost everyday gamble in ship or genting and he survive because of his very good discipline, he dont bring much to the casinos and hes content with winning only $50 to $100. But he also did not get rich as he frequently fall into his own "weaknesses" from time to time.

Theres no definately win system, but by the combinations of several techniques, should give the player a better winning chance.

Atlantic City casino revenues down in October
Atlantic City's 11 casinos see revenues decline almost 10 percent in October
November 10, 2008: 03:57 PM EST
NEW YORK (Associated Press) - Here's how bad things have gotten for Atlantic City's 11 casinos: Even a revenue decline of nearly 10 percent looks pretty good right now.
That's how much less the casinos won from gamblers in October compared with a year ago.
Though still high, the 9.9 percent decline actually represents progress when compared with the 15.1 percent plunge revenues took in September _ the biggest one-month decline in the 30-year history of casino gambling in Atlantic City.
"I truly don't think we've seen the worst yet," said J. Carlos Tolosa, Eastern Division president of Harrah's Entertainment Inc., which owns four casinos here.
The company has already laid off several hundred workers this year, and may have to let even more go if things don't improve, he said.
The casinos must deal with stiff competition from out-of-state slots parlors, which are stealing Atlantic City's most reliable customers, and the worsening economy, which is leaving the remaining ones less money to gamble with.
For the month, casinos won $346.3 million. Slots revenue was $235.9 million, down 12.7 percent, while table games revenue was $110.3 million, down 3.3 percent.
"These are dismal numbers," Tolosa said.
Eight of the city's 11 casinos posted double-digit declines, and only two showed an increase.
The worst performer was Trump Marina Hotel Casino (down 29.3 percent), followed closely by Resorts Atlantic City (down 28.7 percent), and its sister property, the Atlantic City Hilton Casino Resort (down 21.4 percent).
Other notable declines were posted at the Showboat Casino Hotel (down 20.8 percent); Bally's Atlantic City (down 18.5 percent); Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino (down 17.3 percent), and the Tropicana Casino and Resort, whose parent company on Monday filed a plan to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The Tropicana was down 16.2 percent for the month.
The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, which last week laid off 400 workers, was down 2.5 percent.
The Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort was up 20.5 percent, helped by the opening of a second hotel tower, and luckier than usual play in its casino.
Harrah's Resort Atlantic City was the only other casino to post a revenue increase, up 63 percent. It, too, was helped by the opening of a second hotel tower earlier this year.
Another factor hurting October's revenues was a smoking ban that took effect Oct. 15. Although it was be put on hold for at least a year on Nov. 16, the ban has already done its damage at some casinos.
Tolosa said slot revenue at Harrah's four Atlantic City casinos was down by 12 percent for the first 15 days of October. But once the ban took effect, slots numbers fell 20 percent in the final two weeks of the month.
A similar effect was seen at the three casinos run by Trump Entertainment Resorts, company CEO Mark Juliano said.
He said the opening of the Chairman Tower at the Taj Mahal in late September started paying off big in October.
"The penthouse suites and the suites in the Chairman Tower enable us to reach out to a higher-end table player, and they are coming," he said.
For the year so far, the casinos have won $3.9 billion, down 6.6 percent from the same period last year.
This year will be the second in a row that revenues have declined in Atlantic City, after 28 years of consecutive increases.

I do not know how your friend plays so I cannot comment on that. It's true that betting systems can give players a higher winning chance in the short term, but will still lose overall to the casino in the long-run.

It's not that I want to purposely burst your bubble, but there are several legitimate winning techniques (eg. card-counting) out there that can actually get an edge over the casino. Unfortunately, betting systems are not one of them

Yes, I have to use the assumption of casino having no limits and player having an infinite bankroll to illustrate the powers of decision making, an advantage over the dealer.

The wizard of odds thinking is seriously flawed when he assume that it is possible for head or tail to be tossed all the time, taking into account that the outcome is independent of the past, and we all know that this will not happen and have never ever happen.

I am a strong supporter of the law of chance and the way I gamble is all based on this law.

However in all my years of gambling and having putting myself into serious thoughts about the law of chance, I began to think that maybe there are still unknown laws not known to men yet. For instance, we have read everywhere that in the law of chance, what is going to happen is purely random and does not depend on the past, if this is absolutely true, then I just wonder why the banker dragon, player dragon, head dragon or tail dragon, never happen more than 50 times continuously. All of us will also agree that, intuitively, we all know that the longer a dragon, the chances of it flipping is greater and yet we all know that it is still actually 50%-50% chance either way. The argument goes on and on and we say that if black can appear 2 times in a row, then surely it also can appear 10 times in a row and 1,000,000 times in a row and yet we all know for sure that for black to appear 10 times in a row is possible but would be impossible to appear 1,000,000 times in a row. I am bringing out this point to show that maybe there are unknown laws not yet found by men and that "the outcome does not depend on the past" is questionable.

Hi bro,

In the casinos, I have only seen 1 other person before who bets only on banker. The other person I knew of is you. So at least I know I am not alone. :o

I believe that martingale system if used in a right way can be a powerful system. That's if one caps his limit.
Which goes to say you go onto a 4-5 row losing streak, there is no point going on and on with martingale as eventually if won, its only that basic stake that is being won back.

Martingale can win if the streak is only 2-3 then it flips. Consistently it fetches a profit and slowly you see money grow. But if it goes over more than 5 and one continue to double up or add up, the amount can be huge and who can say on that fateful game, the losing streak can't go on for another 10 or 20 times. It can happen.
So I can only say, cap the martingale and one should be quite safe.

To know more about law of chances, then we got to read up more on books from statisticians and mathematicians.

From the games that I seen, very often the most common scenarios will be

BBBBBBB
or
PPPPPPP
or
BPBPBPBP
or
BBBPPPBBB
or
BBPPBBPP

so there is no sure win way to break thrends or via watsoever. Every system has its weakness. I feel the only way is to find a common system that can win most games and when you lose that 1 game, minimum losses must be maintained

If I just play on Banker,
most games I win, when a player streak comes, I game over.
so thats why I always think, if I can win 10 units, I can lose 10 units too. So cap your loss at 5 or 6 units. Then forever your max can win 10 and your max loss will only be 5 units.

I am not going to any land casino or ship casino meanwhile as on MC resting recuperating from a minor surgery.
But I am still studying on Baccarat play, minimising losses, extracting more gains.

In casino, it was said only 2 games can be played due to low house edge.
Baccarat and Roulette.
I chose Baccarat because I compared

Baccarat has Player, Banker, Tie
If tie happens and I placed bets on Player or Banker, I still get my bet back.

If I play roulette and happen to bet on Red or Black and Green(0) opens, I lose.
and the percentage of opening Red or Black is both 48.6%
In Baccarat, the percentage of opening Banker is higher and tie bets gets returned. The only draw back is the commission.

Still I find it more worthwhile to play Baccarat than Roulette.

If anyone wants to play Blackjack or Pontoon, you have to be an expert in this game. I seldom play this game but if want to learn from experts, if go Genting, don't go to the public gaming areas but go to the International Room for silver worldcard members and above. Inside you can see some experts playing very well and probably learn a trick or two from observing how they play.

You can see how some with 2 As they don't even split or even 2 8s, when banker has 2, they also don't split. In the book of Blackjack which I read, it is always said there is Basic strategy. I can say read for info, but not to be too engrossed in it. Because in the live battlefield in the casino, basic strategy can be rendered very useless.

In Roulette,

I have observed that the dealer will spin the wheel right and spin ball left
next round,
spin wheel left and spin ball right
and every round is alternate.

Remember the dealers are like robots. They are like immune to their jobs after making hundreds thousands of spins. They will find a position which is comfort to their hands in spinning the ball or spinning the wheel.
Look at whether the dealer is right handed or left handed. Every dealer have their own habit of spinning.

If observation is long enough, you will realise that this particular dealer when spin right, will drop more onto that sector compared to other sectors.
When he spins left, will drop more onto another sector.

This is just my observation, but I have not really gone too much into it.
The theory of now open 17, next round opens 17 again is likely more of coincidence

However, if now open 17, skip 1 round, next round opens 17 again, this is a very strong likelihood that it is not just coincidence anymore.:o

The theory of now open 17, next round opens 17 again is likely more of coincidence

However, if now open 17, skip 1 round, next round opens 17 again, this is a very strong likelihood that it is not just coincidence anymore.:o

I've done research on repeat. In roulette, the frequency of a number appearing is on average 1/37, i.e a number will appear once every 37 rounds. Similarly, the frequency of a repeat is also 1/37 (2.7%), i.e a repeat will occur once every 37 rounds. see here for yourself http://wave.prohosting.com/event/cgi-bin/how many times repeat.cgi
