Montreal Imam Adil Charkaoui told his followers in a sermon shared online that Muslim women should abstain from medical care except if it adheres to Shariah law. Shariah law is an Islamic framework for laws applied to varying degrees in Muslim countries.
On a video posted on his mosque’s website depicting one of his sermons and reported in La Presse, he addressed his female followers, stating that they are banned from receiving medical care that does not adhere to Sharia regulations. He specifically made reference to the Shariah rule that Muslim women are banned from exposing any parts of their bodies to a member of the opposite sex. “It is not permissible for male doctors and nurses – and other professionals in the medical field — to treat a woman, except in the case of the absence of a female doctor,” he said. Charkaoui throws in another obstacle for women to receive medical care saying that, “The doctor must treat only the place he needs to treat or see and the woman must be accompanied by a male representative from her family ‘so that there is no opportunity for derailing’.”
Charkaoui recently made headlines when he gave a speech at an October 28th pro-Hamas rally, following the October 7th attack, calling for “Allah to destroy Zionists and anti-Islamists.” He is under investigation for possible violations of the Criminal Code’s provisions against incitement to violence and hate speech.
