Homeless boy, 11, caught for sniffing glue
Syahirah Anwar
When The New Paper met him, he had just returned from one of his trips to the station.
Their older brother has been in RTC for armed robbery since January.
Said Mike: "Our brother has always warned us against getting into trouble like him. He used to study and he finished his N levels."
Responding to queries from The New Paper, the police confirmed that arrests were made on Oct 20 involving two boys between the ages of 11and 13.
They said that investigations are ongoing.
Mary said she had no choice but to let the children fend for themselves.
She claimed she had turned to people for help. But friends have their own problems and she doesn't qualify to rent a flat directly from HDB.
Mary said she has applied several times to rent a HDB flat but has been rejected repeatedly.
Why not rent a room in the open market?
She said that with her monthly earnings of $800, she could not afford to do so as landlords she approached were charging $600 a month for a room.
A check on room rental prices shows that a single room could cost between $450 and $700.
Mary said her problems started after her divorce.
She and her ex-husband were co-lessees of a four-room Yishun flat which they sold and split the money.
At that time, she was no longer working as she left her job at a maid agency in 2006.
Mary claimed she received only around $6,000 from the sale after paying their housing loan and outstanding bills.
After her divorce, Mary and her four children lived with a friend for 18 months but she left after a dispute over rent.
She said she has since got a job that pays her $1,500 and hopes to turn her life around.
Meanwhile, Joe will have to live by his wits.
Nevermind that he's all of 11.
