PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA (AFP) - A Cambodian court on Wednesday sentenced a 48-year-old Frenchman to seven months in prison for soliciting sex with a child prostitute. Olivier Madrieres was arrested in November last year after he was found having sex with the 15-year-old girl at a guesthouse in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.
The Phnom Penh Municipal Court sentenced Madrieres to two years' imprisonment, but ordered him to spend only seven months in jail from the date of his arrest, with the rest of the sentence suspended. The court also ordered Madrieres to pay US$750 to the girl. Cambodia has struggled to shed its reputation as a haven for paedophiles, putting dozens of foreigners in jail for child sex crimes or deporting them to face trial in their home countries since 2003.
