should not even be called Burmese as Shan are not strictly not Burmese (Bamar) but Thai (Tai)
that's interesting! according to wikipedia which I just went digging through, shan are all over SE Asia, but mainly in Burma some 5 million? However, the tai people population 93 million of which the Shan are supposed to be a subgroup are mainly from Thailand. So I guess it's depending on which group you bundle them with.
But what's really interesting is that the Shan people were originally from Yunnan! Which makes ah Sam, (drum roll please) Chinese!!
but of course he could be bamar or karen or rakhine or even cuntonese....
