Singapore warns Myanmar activists to stop protests
Saturday 23rd August, 2008

Singapore's home ministry warned political activists from Myanmar in the city state not to ignore repeated police orders to stop illegal public protests and anti-Myanmar activities, the The Strait Times newspaper said Saturday.

A spokesman of the Overseas Burmese Patriots (OBP), a group of Myanmar activists, said the Singapore government has not renewed immigration passes for five of its members who had participated in a public protest in November.

'We do have suspicion that the rationale for the rejections might be because of the protests and our activities,' Myanmarese activist Myo Myint Maung said.

A ministry spokesperson said 'the right of a foreign national to work or stay in Singapore is not a matter of entitlement or a right to be secured by political demand and public pressure' and that activists repeatedly ignored requests from government officials to meet to discuss the group's conduct.

Chasing them out of Singapore "may put them into physical danger of the violence that the Singapore government condemned [last year]," said Myo Myint Maung.

When asked if they regretted their actions, Mr Myo said, "If we ever regretted what we did, we would be sitting quietly at home repenting rather than going public with our difficulties."

He said all that the Burmese community in Singapore, numbering 100,000, wants to know the rationale for the harsh actions by the Singapore government against the activists for expressing their "frustration and discontent of the Burmese people in Singapore at the outrageous atrocities committed by the Burmese military junta".

Should we treat them equally with us?

Remember that we benefit from FT presence.

Without them locals would not have such challenging competitors for uni/poly places.

Our excess money can be better used to sponsor their education while our aunties pick cans from coffeeshop tables.

But its money well spent as we bond them to work in singapore. Why hire expensive sinkie when cheap burmese will do.

When you mass import CHEAP labour and foreign talent, you also import their culture, their work ethics.

They are not like SIngaporean who are docile and can take anthing down !

Burma should do a tit for tat by importing Singaporeans there. Burmese are docile in burma but vocal in Singapore. Maybe Singaporeans can be vocal in Burma. Just my 2cents worth:D

Sometimes i wonder if we have become so docile that we are blind to injustices around us.

On this case, an explanation is definately due to them. In fact to all of us.

Otherwise we will go on to assume that its because of their activism.

they kuai lan with gahmen, now gahmen kuai lan with them. too bad this is not their country, so no fight with the biggest kau lan kia's in this country - PAP

Actually, its lucky that its not their country. At least they are only barred from reentering Singapore. It could be alot worst.

NUS detects tampered transcripts in applications by 4 foreigners in 2007
By Wong Siew Ying, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 25 August 2008 2203 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore universities and polytechnics have checks in place to screen the academic qualifications of foreign applicants for its jobs and scholarships.

Education Minister Ng Eng Hen said these include those who seek admission into their degree and diploma programmes.

The strict processes have enabled the institutions to detect fake degrees in the past.
For example, Dr Ng said in 2007, the National University of Singapore detected two undergraduate applicants and two postgraduate applicants who had tampered with their transcripts.

These students either withdrew their application when confronted, or had their candidature terminated immediately.

The education minister disclosed this in a written reply to parliamentary questions raised by Nominated MP, Associate Professor Kalyani Mehta.

Professor Mehta had wanted to know what has been done to verify resumes and academic degrees of new foreign talent applicants for jobs and scholarships here.

Dr Ng said these applicants are required to produce original certificates for verification, and the school may also contact the degree-awarding institution or the applicant's previous employer to verify their details.

The universities and polytechnics also typically recruit international students and potential employees from overseas institutions which they are familiar with. - CNA/vm
