Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has assumed responsibility for his team's poor form in recent games.
The Bavarian giants fell seven points off the pace in the race for the Bundesliga title after Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund's 2-1 success over Mainz at the Signal Iduna Park.
Bayern Munich's sporting director Christian Nerlinger seemingly threw in the towel after the loss to B04, stating that the club must shift their focus to ending their poor run of form on the road.
German sources suggest that head coach Heynckes could be sacked if the Bavarians are unable to overturn the one-goal deficit from their first-leg defeat in the Champions League round of 16 tie against Basel.
"The criticism is valid also for myself [not just the players]," Heynckes told reporters after the loss to Bayer Leverkusen. "I am the person responsible for the whole thing.
"Whoever coaches Bayern has to deal with such situations. I must remain calm and confident in myself. I think I have the necessary experience."
The Bavarians host Hoffenheim on Saturday in their upcoming Bundesliga fixture, and three days later they welcome Basel at the Allianz Arena in the Champions League.
Japanese in Europe: Honda returns to action, while Kagawa scores winner
Keisuke Honda's superb play in CSKA's 2-2 draw was one of many highlights for Japanese players in Europe this weekend, including decisive goals by Kagawa and Maya Yoshida

Japan's top Europe-based players overcame tough travel schedules and the disappointing midweek loss to Uzbekistan to have productive weekends across the continent.
In his long-awaited return to Russian Premier League play‚ Keisuke Honda dazzled on the pitch in his first domestic start of 2012. Starting at holding midfielder‚ the brash attacker was involved in both of his team's equalising goals in a 2-2 draw against Zenit.
After surrendering the opener‚ CSKA's first goal came after Honda's cross met Alan Dzagoev‚ who stuffed in the rebound after his shot was initially blocked by the goalkeeper. Down again 2-1 in the second half‚ Honda's pass from the top of the box to an unmarked Ahmed Musa resulted in the team's second equaliser‚ allowing them to take away a point.
Honda himself nearly scored before being substituted out late in the match with a long-range clanger off the crossbar‚ and appears to be regaining his pre-surgery form quickly.
STAR OF THE WEEKEND
Keisuke Honda
Although he didn't run as much as usual, Honda was the best player in CSKA's formation and displayed his trademark style in setting up both goals.

Returning from the midweek international loss with Japan, Dortmund’s Shinji Kagawa wasted no time to display another man-of-the-match performance in the champions’ 2-1 home win against Mainz. In what evolved to a narrow game against manager Jurgen Klopp’s former club a blocked attempt by the former Cerezo attacker proved instrumental for in-form Jakub Blaszczykowski’s opener before the half hour.
After Mainz fought back with emotional Mohamed Zidan who left the champions for the visitors in the winter break scoring the equaliser‚ it was the Japanese who struck the hosts’ winning goal in the 77th. The result not only further cements Dortmund’s position at the top of the table but sets a record for the club which never before won eight straight games.
In a crucial match for embattled manager Claudio Ranieri's Inter‚ Yuto Nagatomo played a full 90 minutes but did not have much to show for it as his defensive lapses were at least partially responsible for both of Catania's goals. The Nerazzurri may have fought back in the second half for a 2-2 draw‚ but Nagatomo's form continues to be a disconcerting question mark as the team is now winless in its last nine matches.
In Eredivisie play‚ Mike Havenaar ensured that Vitesse would break their three-game losing streak when he scored the second goal of their 2-0 win against De Graafschap The goal came in the 73rd minute when Havenaar broke past the visitors' back line and coolly slotted the ball home with a low kick. The 194-centimetre Samurai's goal was just the first to come off his foot since joining the club this past winter.
Meanwhile‚ Robert Cullen helped his VVV side to another crucial win as they struggle to avoid relegation. Down 1-0 to NAC Breda in the 85th minute‚ the visiting goalkeeper failed to trap Danny Holla's free kick allowing Cullen to pounce on the rebound for his third goal of the season.
Just two minutes later‚ another Holla free kick from mid-range bounced freely in the penalty area before Maya Yoshida met the ball in mid-air with his left foot‚ giving VVV a miraculous come-from-behind 2-1 victory and giving the side their first four-game winning streak in half a century. The club may still be in the danger zone‚ but if Yoshida and Cullen can keep up their form in recent weeks there may yet be a chance of avoiding relegation.
Italy
Takayuki Morimoto (Novara): Found himself outside the squad as his club was beaten 1-0 away to Bologna.
Germany
Shinji Okazaki (Stuttgart): Started in the 4-0 away win over Hamburg, substituted in the 71st minute. The 25-year-old wasn't able to continue his scoring form for a fourth consecutive league match‚ but earned a penalty which Serbian international Zdravko Kuzmanovic converted for the side's 2-0 in minute 31.
Gotoku Sakai (Stuttgart): Played a full 90 minutes in his club's 4-0 win at Hamburg. In his fourth game for the Swabians‚ the Albirex loanee put in a solid display on the left flank‚ again partnering well with Okazaki‚ and recording his side's most ball touches as well as crosses.
Hajime Hosogai (Augsburg): Full appearance in the 2-2 draw away to Hannover. In a memorable game which saw the Southerners claim a valuable away point‚ the former Urawa Reds man had a solid game‚ being involved in the build-up to his team's opening goal.
Makoto Hasebe (Wolfsburg): Watched the scoreless draw away to Kaiserslautern from the bench.
Atsuto Uchida (Schalke): Featured on the bench for 2-1 loss at Freiburg.
Takashi Usami (Bayern Munich): Not included in lineup for his team's 2-0 loss at Leverkusen.
Yuki Otsu (Borussia Monchengladbach): Watched the 1-0 loss at Nurnberg from the bench.

England

Oliver Kahn has admitted that the powerful displays exhibited by Borussia Dortmund of late are making Bayern Munich seem less of a threat.
The German champions have opened up a seven-point gap at the Bundesliga summit over their Bavarian rivals, but the ex-goalkeeper was adamant that his former side have simply been unlucky regarding recent results, and should not throw in the towel for the title just yet.
"Bayern have [also] played dominant football, but what surprises me is that they have almost given up the championship," Kahn told Bild.
"In Leverkusen, Bayern played strongly in the first half, but their opponents' goal was not breached. The current strength of Dortmund is also making Bayern's players seem to pass by without a trace.
"However, one should not give up faith in the title. Eventually, Dortmund's run will come to an end."
Bayern have gained much exposure in the press lately as various members of the club have publicly expressed their opinions on the side's disappointing form, which has also put coach Jupp Heynckes under intense pressure to keep his job next season.
However, Kahn dismissed the notion of a crisis and believes those connected to the club should refrain from speaking to the press and instead keep quiet.
"We should not panic. The foundations of Bayern are so stable that they could endure a period in which things are not running optimally," he continued.
"With the pressure of success bearing down on the club, there is obviously a latent unrest at the moment, as the objectives are not being achieved.
"Unrest in the team is normal, and not counter-productive if it is properly channeled.
"It is extremely problematic, however, when internal problems are addressed in public."
The Champions League winner was also quizzed on whether Dortmund's renaissance bore any resemblance to the side of the 90s, which saw the likes of Matthias Sammer, Andreas Moller and Jurgen Kohler brought to the club for big money in exchange for silverware.
"Compared to the 90s, the current success is based not on spending but on financial viability," mused Kahn.
"That opened up the opportunity of going back on top for the club. If one watches Dortmund, one gets the impression that they have a vision."

Dietmar Hamann has cast doubt on the prospect of fellow countryman Lukas Podolski making a successful impact at Arsenal next season.
It is thought Podolski, 26, will move to north London in the summer and join compatriot Per Mertesacker as Arsenal agreed a reported £10.8million fee with his club Koln. But Hamann believes, Podolski's past experience at Bayern Munich suggest he may not be the ideal signing for Arsene Wenger.
“Podolski is obviously a very good player because he has shown it for a number of years in the [German] national team,” Hamann told Talksport.
“He’s scored a lot of goals for them but the only thing is that most of his form, or all of his best form, is in the national team.
“He went to Bayern Munich a few years ago, he couldn’t really make a breakthrough there, and obviously he’s back in his home town of Köln where he is loved, where he’s their main player and he blossoms.
“He’s scored a lot of goals this year but again, the one time he played for a big club, at Bayern, he didn’t really cut it.
“It’s always different to play at a big club because you’re one of many and at Köln he’s their main player.
“He’s scored more goals this season than the rest of the team [combined].
“So he is in tremendous form this year but then again I always feel scoring goals for Köln, where he takes every free-kick and every penalty, is very different to scoring goals for Bayern Munich or Arsenal if he does come.
Podolski has so far netted 16 times in just 20 league games in an impressive Bundesliga campaign as well as 43 times in 91 caps for Germany. He has featured in the past four international tournaments, collecting the best young player award at World Cup 2006.
“He’s a level-headed kid,” Hamann continued.
“He’s not a bad person, I’ve not got any worries about him in that respect but then again if you come to a foreign country and don’t know the language, sometimes that has other challenges.
“I just thought that with his failure to make an impact at Bayern Munich, I wasn’t sure whether he was the right player for Arsenal.
“Obviously Arsene Wenger would have scouted him over the last few months or years. He is undoubtedly a very good player but whether he fits into Arsenal – I’m not sure.
“I think [£10million] is a lot of money for a player who has not made it at a big club with the one chance he has had. He’s very similar to [Robin] van Persie.
“He’s a left-footed player who likes to play in and around the box. I don’t know what the thinking or the reason around it was but I’m not sure whether he will be a success.
The 23-year-old defender admitted that the Bavarians have the advantage against other teams, but stressed that collective play is more important than raw talent

Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels has disputed the perception that Bayern Munich have the best team in the Bundesliga.
Bayern manager Christian Nerlinger has admitted that the Bundesliga title is no longer the club's main focus after they fell seven points behind leaders Dortmund.
Hummels reckons that the Allianz Arena outfit have better solutions than their domestic rivals, but stressed that there is more to a team than just raw talent.
"Bayern do not have the top 11 individuals," Hummels told Sport 1. "Of course they have the best players in the Bundesliga in some positions.
"But everyone knows that we are better equipped in some positions. Bayern also know this.
"By and large they are, of course, at an advantage against any team. But that's the beauty of football: the best individual players do not always make the best team."

Sforza: I am sure that Favre will be Bayern Munich coach
The former FCB midfielder believes that the current Monchengladbach boss is destined to replace Jupp Heynckes at the Bavarian club after his fine work at Gladbach

Grasshoppers coach Ciriaco Sforza, who wore the Bayern Munich jersey during two different spells at the club, has stated his belief that Borussia Monchengladbach trainer Luciano Favre will be the next boss at the Allianz Arena.
Current head coach Jupp Heynckes has come under scrutiny following the Bavarians' recent slump in form as they have dropped to second spot in the Bundesliga table, seven points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.
Heynckes stressed on Thursday that he is confident he will see out his contract until 2013 with Bayern, but Sforza feels that there may have already been contact between Favre and FCB.
"There is something going on. I am sure that Lucien Favre will be Bayern Munich coach," Sforza said to Berner Zeitung.
Favre has a contract with Monchengladbach until the summer of 2013.
Werder Bremen collected their first victory at home this year with a comprehensive 3-0 win over nearest rivals Hannover in the Bundesliga.
The win moves Bremen within a point of fifth-placed Schalke and four points clear of Hannover in the final Europa League spot. Claudio Pizarro opened the scoring for the hosts, converting Mehmet Ekicki's free-kick after Hannover had gone close on 30 minutes.
Sebastian Prodl made a successful return after two months out with facial injuries and headed home another free-kick from Ekicki for Bremen's second in the 49th minute.
Markus Rosenberg had a goal disallowed before half-time but eventually got on the score sheet when he prodded in Bremen's third from Pizarro's pass.
Elsewhere, Schalke consolidated fourth position with a comfortable 3-1 win at home to Hamburg.
Teemu Pukki's header in the fifth minute gave Schalke the perfect start before goals from Christoph Metzelder (26) and leading scorer Klaas-Jan Huntenlaar, from the penalty spot, effectively snuffed out Hamburg's chances before half-time.
Dutchman Huntenlaar stepped up to smash home his 34th goal in all competitions this season following Heiko Westermann's foul in the box.
The three points ends a run of two defeats for Schalke and extends their lead over fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen to seven points.

Japanese in Europe: Miyaichi MVP after game-winning assist
This week's European action saw fewer goals but plenty of excitement for the Japanese contingent as the likes of Makoto Hasebe and Atsuto Uchida notched assists for their clubs

In the Premier League‚ Ryo Miyaichi was a big contributor in Bolton's 2-1 win over QPR as both clubs fight to avoid relegation.
Miyaichi played a full 90 minutes‚ but his shining moment came in the 86th minute when he received a long pass outside of the penalty area before holding the ball up and dishing the ball to Ivan Klasnic‚ who scored the winning goal.
In addition to being able to celebrate his first Premier League win‚ Miyaichi was also named the MVP of the match and won praise from boss Owen Coyle.
In the Bundesliga‚ Hajime Hosogai may not have scored in Saturday evening's home match for struggling Augsburg against champions Borussia Dortmund‚ but by man marking his fellow countryman Shinji Kagawa he took the creative engine of the visitors out of the game. He therefore proved decisive for the Southerners securing an unlikely point.
While the 26-year-old former Urawa Reds man neutralised his attacking counterpart and took control of central midfield with his team-mates‚ Kagawa was substituted in the 70th minute after a frustrating match.

Augsburg held on for the scoreless draw which puts them above the drop zone. Dortmund meanwhile‚ see their comfortable lead to second-placed Bayern cut to five points.
In Eredivisie action‚ Maya Yoshida scored his team's only goal to give them an early load in VVV's 3-1 loss at Roda JC. The goal was Yoshida's fifth of the season‚ setting a new personal best.
Yoshida then went on to earn a straight red card in the 73rd minute when he was seen intentionally elbowing a Roda JC player after play had stopped.

Shinji Okazaki (Stuttgart): Started in the scoreless home draw against Kaiserslautern but was substituted in the 82nd minute. The left-sided attacker was lively throughout.

Yuki Otsu (Borussia Monchengladbach): Not included in lineup in scoreless home draw to Freiburg.
Atsuto Uchida (Schalke): Played a full 90 minutes in the 3-1 home win against Hamburg. The right-back had a good game‚ crossing perfectly for Teemu Pukki's opener in the fifth minute‚ after a neat one-two with Marco Hoger. The 23-year-old could have added another assist to his name later on if Raul hadn't missed the fine opportunity provided by Uchida.
Takashi Inui (Bochum): Played a full 90 minutes in the scoreless draw away to Paderborn. While his team deserved the point away to the league's surprise package‚ the 23-year-old looked ineffective‚ fielded as a left-sided forward.

Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski has rebuffed an offer from the club to extend his contract, which runs out in 2014.
The 23-year-old has established himself as a key player at BVB this season, netting 16 goals in 25 Bundesliga games.
His fine form of recent prompted speculation that he might leave for a bigger club, and Dortmund acted quickly to fend off interest by offering him a contact extension.
The player and his agent, however, were not impressed by Dortmund's financial tender and have declined the initial proposal.
"We are disappointed with the offer. I've said this to the president [Dr. Reinhard Rauball]." Agent Cezary Kucharski told Revier Sport.
"A player of this class should be among the highest-paid footballers at Dortmund. The club managers have pledged that Robert is a part of their future plans."
With over two years left on his contract it is likely that negotiations will continue as the Bundesliga champions try to hold on to their leading goalscorer of this year's campaign.
Former Schalke striker Mulder: Huntelaar might not be 'suitable for a top club' and should remain in Gelsenkirchen
The Netherlands international's sensational goalscoring for in the Bundesliga this season has reportedly seen him again attract the interest of some top European sides

Former Schalke striker Youri Mulder doubts whether Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has what it takes to excel at a "big club" and believes the forward should remain in Gelsenkirchen.
Huntelaar has netted 19 times in 23 Bundesliga appearances so far this season and his impressive form has reportedly attracted the attention of a number of top European sides, with Manchester United said to be particularly keen on signing the Dutchman.
However, Mulder believes that in light of the forward's unsuccessful spells at Real Madrid and AC Milan, the Netherlands international should stay put, particularly as Huntelaar grew up in Angerlo, which is just 100km from Gelsenkirchen.
"I advise him to extend at Schalke," Mulder told SPOX.com. "Perhaps he dreams of playing in England, but Schalke are the right club for him.
"The club have potential and an environment in which Huntelaar feels at home. This is evident in his performances: he needs to feel at home in order to show his quality.
"I don't know whether he is suitable for a top club. At Schalke he can show exactly what makes him strong.
"Sitting in the box, like a predator lurking at the chance to create a goal from nothing. In the penalty box, he is one of the best.
"But at an absolute top club, something else is expected of a striker: a lot of running, and sprinting. Huntelaar, on the other hand, is lacking some speed.
"The fact is that he failed at Real Madrid and AC Milan; at Schalke, he made it. After his adventures in Spain and Italy, he should appreciate what Schalke have done for him."
Mulder admitted that he would like to see Huntelaar joined in Gelsenkirchen by compatriot Luuk de Jong, who is generating much interest on account of his impressive goalscoring exploits with Twente.
"I know that Schalke have been scouting him closely," the 42-year-old revealed.
Mulder, who was born in Belgium but capped by Netherlands, spent nine years with Schalke during his playing days.

Bundesliga wrap: Kagawa wins it for Dortmund, Bayern hit Hertha for six
18 March 2012
Dortmund extended their record unbeaten in the Bundesliga on Saturday while Bayern Munich continued their impressive scoring form against Hertha Berlin.Dortmund set a new club record of 20 matches without loss with a 1-0 victory over Werder Bremen at Signal-Iduna-Park.
The Bundesliga leaders were far more dominant than the scoreline suggests as Roman Weidenfeller had little to do between the posts and a Shinji Kagawa strike was enough to secure victory.Dortmund stormed into the lead after just eight minutes as they countered from a Bremen corner.
A cross from the left found Ilkay Gundongan at the back post and he unselfishly squared the ball back across goal for Kagawa to knock in a simple goal on his birthday. The hosts almost grabbed a second four minutes later as Bremen allowed Jakub Blaszczykowski space to run into on the left but his shot was deflected wide of the post.
Dortmund continued to pepper Sebastian Mielitz's goal with shots but the visitors managed to work Weidenfeller in a rare foray forward. With 21 minutes gone Mehmet Ekici's shot from distance was spilled by the keeper but he managed to recover the ball as no-one followed the effort in.Dortmund continued to dominate yet the second goal remained elusive.
Ten minutes after the restart Lukas Piszczek's cross fell to Kagawa but the Japanese sliced his effort the wrong side of the post.Bremen rarely had an opportunity to get forward and press for an equaliser due to the hosts' continuous pressure and the single goal advantage looked as though it would be enough.
The next goal did not come but it was enough to keep Dortmund five points clear of Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga after the Bavarians thrashed Hertha 6-0 at the Olympiastadion. After scoring seven goals in their last two matches, against Hoffenheim and Basel, Bayern hit six past relegation threatened Hertha, with Dutch midfiedler Arjen Robben bagging a hat-trick.
Thomas Mueller scored the opener on nine minutes before Robben added two in eight minutes, the second of which came from the penalty spot.Mario Gomez also netted a penalty just after the interval to score his eighth goal in three games, before a goal from Toni Kroos and another Robben spot kick sealed the victory.
Bremen, meanwhile, lose valuable ground in the race for Europe but remain in sixth place. In other matches, Borussia Moenchengladbach kept hold of third place after a 2-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen.Highly rated youngster Marco Reus scored the opener after seven minutes for Moenchengladbach, although Leverkusen responded with just 15 minutes left.
Stefan Kiessling was the goalscorer and his strike sent the BayArena crowd into raptures. But Moenchengladbach kept pushing for a winner and Reus set up Belgian substitute Igor De Camargo in the dying stages as Lucien Favre's side grabbed a valuable three points.
Elsewhere, Patrick Helmes struck a double in Wolfsburg's come-from-behind 3-1 win at Nuremberg, while Freiburg also won by the same scoreline at Hamburg. Augsburg defeated Mainz 2-1 in the day's other match.

Former Bayern Munich midfielder Stefan Effenberg has slammed Franck Ribery and Toni Kroos for unproper behaviour in Saturday's 6-0 victory against Hertha Berlin.
The 43-year-old's criticism comes as a result of the duo playing a game of 'rock, paper, scissors' to determine who would take a free kick during the game.
"They were playing against a team that is fighting against relegation and for them to be joking around - this should not happen," Effenberg told Sky90.
This is not the first time, however, that such an game has been played during a Bundesliga game this season: in November, Borussia Monchengladbach duo Marco Reus and Mike Hanke did the same thing during a 3-0 win against Koln.
Bayern are currently second in the Bundesliga table, five points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.
