Bundesliga wrap: Bayern clinch Champions League spot
8 May 2011
Bayern Munich has ruthlessly thrashed basement side St Pauli 8-1 in the Bundesliga to seal their Champions League berth for next season.
Mario Gomez grabbed a hat-trick to take his league tally to 27 for the season while Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben both hit braces to confirm St Pauli's relegation.
Belgian defender Daniel van Buyten scored the other goal for the former champions, while Marcel Eger scored a consolation for the losing side in the 78th minute.
Bayern - three points behind second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, who could only muster a 1-1 draw with Hamburg - are still a chance for automatic qualification to the premier European competition.
Goals from Mikael Silvestre and Claudio Pizarro helped Werder Bremen confirm their top-flight status against German champions Borussia Dortmund.
Borussia Monchengladbach moved into 16th on the standings, which carries relegation playoff status, after a 2-0 win over Freiburg thanks to goals from Mike Hanke and Marco Reus.
Schalke's woes continued as they went down to Europa League-bound Mainz 3-1 just days after being bundled out of the Champions League by English giants Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Former Ajax Amsterdam, Real Madrid and AC Milan striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar's 47th-minute strike was not enough, as Andrew Schurrle, Lewis Holtby and Nikolce Noveski netted for Mainz.
Wolfsburg are still teetering on the brink of relegation after they succumbed to a 2-1 loss to Kaiserslautern.
Mario Mandzukic drew first blood in the seventh minute for Felix Magath's men, but saw his effort cancelled out by Srdjan Lakic in the 26th, before Martin Amedick secured the points for the Red Devils on the stroke of half-time.
Eintracht Frankfurt must defeat champions Dortmund next week to keep alive their survival hopes after losing 2-0 to Cologne.
Elsewhere, Hoffenheim accounted for Nurnberg 2-1 while 2006/07 champions Stuttgart won 2-1 against Hannover, who have settled for a place in the Europa League.
Bundesliga wrap: Wolfsburg safe, Leverkusen stay second
14 May 2011
Wolfsburg secured Bundesliga safety on the last day of the season with a 3-1 win over Hoffenheim on Saturday.
A brace from Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic helped Felix Magath's team come from behind to guarantee their spot in the top flight next season.
Brazilian defender Roberto Firmino had given Hoffenheim the lead early in the second half, but Mandzukic's double and a sealer from Grafite meant Wolfsburg did not have to rely on other results to avoid the drop.
The result means that Eintracht Frankfurt will be relegated after finishing 17th, while Borussia Moenchengladbach will face a relegation play-off against the third ranked side from 2.Bundesliga - Bochum.
'Gladbach drew 1-1 at Hamburg on the final day, but the point was not enough to guarantee their safety.
A 42nd-minute strike from Juan Arango was cancelled out by Hamburg midfielder Anis Ben-Hatira, but the point would have been enough to move them from their relegation play-off spot if Wolfsburg had lost.
A win for Eintracht Frankfurt could also have saved Eintracht, but they were relegated following a 3-1 loss at champions Borussia Dortmund.
Midfielder Sebastian Rode put them a goal up early in the second half, but Dortmund fought back courtesy of a brace from Lucas Barrios and a Aleksandar Vasoski own goal.
Eintracht finished with 10 men after substitute Marcel Titsch Rivero was sent off nine minutes from time and just one minute after coming on.
St Pauli, whose relegation was already confirmed, slumped to a 2-1 loss at Mainz.
Matthias Lehmann gave them a lead before the interval but an Andre Schuerrle penalty and Sami Allagui goal kept Mainz in fifth.
Bayer Leverkusen kept hold of second with an own goal from Cedric Makiadi giving them a 1-0 win over Freiburg.
It meant Bayern Munich's 2-1 win over Stuttgart left them in third, as goals from Mario Gomez and Bastian Schweinsteiger cancelled out Shinji Okazaki's first-half strike.
Hannover maintained their grasp of fourth thanks to a 3-1 win over Nuernberg while Schalke's poor season ended with a 2-1 loss against Cologne, where Milivoje Novakovic and Mato Jajalo struck before Raul's 87th-minute consolation goal.
Kaiserslautern scored three times in the opening half an hour in their 3-2 win over Werder Bremen.
Strikers Adam Nemec and Srdjan Lakic, along with defender Rodnei, found the net before Bremen's Torsten Frings and Marko Arnautovic pulled two goals back early in the second half.
Torsten Frings has played his last game for Werder Bremen after the club revealed he would not be offered a new contract.
The 34-year-old's contract with Bremen expires in June, and a fter a disappointing season the club has decided not to offer him a new deal.
"It wasn't a matter of money, there was no offer," Werder's general manager Klaus Allofs said Tuesday. "We've reached a point when we have to start rebuilding."
Frings said he was keen to stay at Bremen, and denied he had rejected a new contract because of money.
"I have to accept that," he told newspaper Kreiszeitung Syke. "It's a shame, I'd rather have left after a more successful season."
"I was recently accused by the public of only thinking of money and not being willing to make concessions. It was not about the money. I had no offer to reject or accept, because there weren't any."
Frings has spent 12 seasons at the Weserstadion in two six-year stints, separated by brief spells at Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
He has made more than 400 appearances in the Bundesliga, as well as earning 79 caps for the German national team.
Normally regular challengers for the Bundelsiga title, Bremen finished a disappointing 13th this season after losing 3-2 at Kaiserslautern on Saturday.
Newly crowned Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund have staged a charity match in aid of the victims of the recent Japanese earthquake.
Most of Dortmund's stars turned out for the game, played at the home of neighbours Duisburg.
Dortmund's Japanese midfield star Shinji Kagawa played for the opposition team, which was made up of Japanese players currently playing in the Bundesliga, and German players who've played in Japan.
Around 10,000 fans turned out for the game, helping to raise more than a million euros for the relief fund, with the help of club sponsors.
Kagawa played a key role in helping Dortmund to their first German title since 2002 this season.
Head coach Jurgen Klopp said his presence was key factor behind the decision to set up the friendly game which ended 2-1 in favour of Dortmund.
"There was a real need. Of course if you have a direct connection with it then it you feel it more strongly," Klopp said.
"We thought it was terrible. It was terrible, but more so because we have Shinji (Kagawa). We were really worried about him and about how his family was. We were involved in a different way."
Money raised from the game will go to the charity Save the Children, in aid of those in need in Japan.
The earthquake and subsequent tsunami on March 11 left nearly 25,000 people dead or missing in the north of the country.
Bundesliga: Borussia Monchengladbach 1 Bochum 0
20 May 2011
Borussia Monchengladbach moved a step closer to remaining in the Bundesliga next season with a 1-0 win over Bochum on Thursday.
In the relegation playoff, featuring Monchengladbach (who finished third-last in the Bundesliga) and Bochum (third in Bundesliga.2), the winner across two legs wins a spot in next season's top flight.
The first leg, at Borussia Park, seemed destined for a goalless draw as both sides were nervy in the season decider.
And as the match headed into second-half injury time, it seemed as if both sides would head to the Rewirpower-Stadion both level until Igor De Camargo's stunning late impact.
A ball in from the left was met by De Camargo, who initially saw his header brilliantly saved by Andreas Luthe, before a goalmouth scramble ensued.
The ball did fall for the Belgian striker again and he produced a stunning strike with a flick of his foot to send the home crowd into raptures with the goal which came two minutes into added time.
The win has given Lucien Favre's side the upper hand as they prepare for the second leg, to be played on May 25.
Schalke ended an eventful season on a resounding high with a 5-0 win over Duisburg in the DFB-Pokal final on Saturday.
Dutch striker Klaas Jan-Huntelaar struck a brace, with Jose Jurado, Benedikt Howedes and teenager Julian Draxler netting the other goals in a rout of their second-tier opponents at the Berlin Olympiastadion.
It was the fourth DFB-Pokal success in Schalke's history and first since 2002, securing passage to the 2011/12 Europa League.
Schalke's Bundesliga form was a major disappointment this season as they slumped from runner-up in 2009/10 to a distant 14th place.
The poor results saw coach Felix Magath sacked in March.
But their form in knockout competitions was the exact opposite.
Under first Magath and then his replacement Ralf Rangnick they made it all the way to the semi-finals of the Champions League before losing to Manchester United.
And they received their reward for an enterprising style of football under Rangnick with a comprehensive cup-final victory.
For their part, Duisburg had overcome the likes of Cologne and Kaiserslautern to reach the final, but the Bundesliga 2 team were no match on the day.
Draxler, 17, had earlier made a name for himself with a last-minute extra-time winner against Nuremburg to put Schalke through to the semis.
Fittingly he was on target for the first in Berlin, volleying home from outside the area 18 minutes into the match.
Huntelaar made it 2-0 just five minutes later following some excellent work from Jefferson Farfan.
And defender Hoewedes was left unmarked from a corner to nod Schalke 3-0 ahead just before half-time.
Huntelaar turned provider 10 minutes into the second half, splitting the Duisburg defence and allowing Spaniard Jurado to get in on the scoring act.
Former Ajax man Huntelaar then completed the scoring himself with 20 minutes to go courtesy of an error from beleaguered Duisburg goalkeeper David Yelldell.
Goalkeeper and fans' favourite Manuel Neuer captained the Schalke team in what is expected to be his last match for the club.
Bundesliga: Borussia Moenchengladbach 1 Bochum 1
26 May 2011
Borussia Moenchengladbach will remain in the Bundesliga after a come-from-behind 1-1 draw at Bochum in the relegation playoff on Wednesday.
Lucien Favre's side earned a 1-0 win at home on May 19 in the first leg, which proved to be the difference after forward Marco Reus struck a 73rd-minute goal to force a draw in Bochum, and a 2-1 win on aggregate for the Bundesliga side.
It came after Moenchengladbach defender Havard Nordtveit put the ball into his own net midway through the first half to level the tie.
Reus' goal was worthy of a tie-clincher as he was put through after a fine build-up, smartly placing his left-foot finish into the bottom corner of goalkeeper Andreas Luthe's net.
Both teams struck the crossbar in a first half that saw Bochum have more of the play, but their inability to take their chances will see them remain in the 2.Bundesliga for consecutive seasons, having been relegated from the top flight in 2009-10.
