2015 until end of June (half-year) : loss of NT$ 47.2 billion (about SGD 2 billions)

Is this another straw man argument to show up Sg Smrt's 'merits'?
Compare apples with apples la.....use hk mtr as the benchmark

These bastards KMT dogs should have cut maintenance budget and they'd be okay like SMRT

rail track construction is very expensive. Most of the time, it is not feasible to construct double track and leave those tracks empty 99% of the time. Its smarter to build single track between the stations and a double track by-pass in the middle to allow trains to pass from opposite sides saving possibly 40% of construction cost for low frequency services.
In Taiwan case, population of taipei and taohsiung is about 2.5 million each and 350km distance, unlike tokyo to osaka (population 15 mil and 10 mil respectively) or nagoya (also very densely populated.) and chinese cities which can be considered as megacities.

So what? The Shinkansen in Japan is also bleeding, but both the Taiwanese and Japanese transits provide far more reliable service than our MRT: better punctuality, more extensive lines, fewer breakdowns.

What's the point of making huge profits every year like SMRT that go straight into the pockets of executives and shareholders, while neglecting maintenance and causing a breakdown every week?

Of course if you can have profitability with reliability like the HK MTR, then that's the ideal situation. That's why the HK MTR sets the gold std.

What does the people who build your trains have anything to do with whether or not ur business makes money?if ur business model sucks and ur business is run by idiots nothing in the world can save it,just like our 13 billion a year army.

Our $13B a year army has kept the peace for the past several decades, unlike countries like Syria, Ukraine, Sudan and even our neighbouring Pinoyland.

Most sinkies and I would say that is money well-spent.

Keep your BS to yourself. $13 bil for 5.5 million people? You gotta be kiddin'. We have the 3rd highest per capita defence spending in the developed world, after the US and Israel. One is a superpower, the other has been at war since its inception. What's our rationale? To invade our peaceful Malay neighbours?

Maybe we are the bastion of hope against islamic rule in the region?

We'd only inspire an arms race in the region. When it comes to a real war, we're absolute chicken fodder – no hinterland, no resources, small inexperienced army which has not seen war since Independence. We even depend on our 'enemies' for drinking water and natural gas.

Bastion? Lumpah! We'd be better off giving the money as aid to these countries and gaining their eternal goodwill.

SMRT runs like a commercial company they are just concern over profit margin they don't care about break down or delay!! As long the bottom line show profit these top executive will get the 3 to 6 months bonus by the millions!!

The other bottom line is to tender for cheap material irregardless of China made inferior quality!!
