Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 21
- Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives.
- Everyone has the right of equal access to public service in his country.
- The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.
Its already a breach of article 21 as everyone has the right to take part in government - so its ridiculous to set so many conditions all of which favours the elite
When the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was drafted & signed in 1948 at UN, Singapore was a colony of England. In 1965 with our Independence, we adopted most of British Common Law, which includes the UN Declaration.
Had Minister of Education Mr Chan deviated from such declaration? Nope. Every citizen STILL has the right to take PART in our free fair election held every 5yrs. No one had been denied the right to public service & our will had always been the authority of the govt whom had been elected by us - citizens.
However, may all be pragmatic. The UN Declaration was drafted & presented to sane minds.
Imagine if a citizen boy of 6 yrs declares he wants to run for President based upon the principles of the Declaration, should he be allowed, & if by some FLUKE CHANCE he gets elected, how is he gonna lead? Or some uneducated drunk lout claims the same rights, to fight for drug use, alchohol abuse, or whatever that inflames the petty desires of unlimited Human imagination & stupidity, - a demagogue whose skills are only that of his mouth, what will happen to Singapore?
Many will claimed that it's the People's choice, but if everyone stand for the Presidency election, to fight for their own self interest - which are many & differs from each individual - there will only be chaos & votes diluted, not to mention the costs of money & time to taxpayers to fund such a CIRCUS.
Thus, to prevent such, the election will have to be STREAMLINED to suitable, capable & proven candidates, legislated by our ELECTED legislators whom are ELECTED because they have our interest at heart, not for personal gain but for the majority by parliamentary consensus or else the People would not had voted them into Power.
It is comprehensible that Opposition parties & its diehard supporters will do all & ANY means to get ahead, even at the cost to social fabric being torn, but ultimately, with the Declaration of Human Rights, it will be the one with the highest votes whom will be the chosen one by citizens, regardless if for legislative or Presidential election.
And at the end of the election, hustings taken down, etc.. may we citizens ALL come TOGETHER as we had pledged during our formative years, to honor our sacred National Pledge as our courageous forefathers had done whom gave us our today, to progress & evolve Singapore to greater heights....
