Today has gone through a huge overhaul through the recent months.

I heard from a very reliable person that the editorial director Balji who is also a founder of the newspaper, WILL NOT be renewing his contract next month and retire.

Balji is a veteran newspaper man yet his role in Today has been a rocky one.

He headed the paper in the first few years but as a start-up it couldn't make money and he was replaced by a more financially savvy Mano Sabnani from Business Times.

Mano made money because he was financially savvy but he was not street savvy. He was replaced - by, you guess right, Balji

But Balji's role on his return is not executive. He is there to guide the paper as a veteran journalist. The newspaper is run day to day by former Channel News Asia man Walter Fernandez. Walter is a very smart man but is very arrogant and offended many people. He has a godfather so may be he can get away with it.

Many of Today journalists have left including many in key positions. More than 20 quit and ten joined this financial year beginning in March, leaving deficit of about ten.

Of the new entrants, some in senior positions, a few quit after a few months.
A few stayed. The most senior person to join is Conrad Raj, a very old bird from Business Times. Conrad is very nice and friendly, sometimes too friendly.

In July alone, seven people quit on the same day. There is one called Audrey who writes for the food and travel section.

There is also a senior founding editor Pauline Dawn Loh who has left Today, in support of her friend Balji or because Balji is leaving, she feels she better leave.

Watch this space. I will post when I get more info.

Or if there are Today people or Mediacorp or SPH or other media people, please update.

True.

This post is of little interest. I am just a busybody.

many sammyboy forummers can appy for TODAY vacancies. Sales sure to shoot up due to heavy usage of front page nude pictures. Back page devoted to casino ,4D and horse tips.
Today editorial will be strongly supportive of PAP to stay alive but have daily NS is killing Sg articles.

This tabloid is also a steriled media. Unless otherwise whoever goes, there's nothing to shout about.:p

Cheers.:D

Bro, all these are old news lah, you try and recycle old news and call it breaking news with capital letters some more, just like your Today newspaper

I know Mano in business circles. He is quite humble guy and not showy. I don't know Balji

When Mano was in charge, the property section is thriving although some of the consultants they quote very bullish. But we as readers are not stupid.

Agent/consultant sure biased one, we must look at the URA data, then go to the site and check market

Go to auction, talk to people, find out the real valuation or breaking point if forced sale

Frankly I don't give a hoot whether Today closed or sold or whatever

Anyway they only employed 200 people or so, if retrenched maybe 30% absorb by parent, 30% go to SPH and the rest - they will probably screw the old farts above 40 - will be left hanging out to dry.

I know because after I turned 40, HR siam me. Luckily I had enough capital and renyuan to go China to develop my business, get married and enjoy life.

If you have chance please go abroad to see the world. Lots of opportunities. I started my own business at 40 and now spend 2/3 of my time in China.

When my children are older, I will emigrate to Australia or New Zealand where the boy/s don't have to do NS.

Singapore is a place for losers and masochists

I wonder if there was any political pressure that is leading Balji to resign.

Would be a waste if you ask me. He tends to push the envelope alot further than the ST. But his life was made difficult form what i hear.

doesnt matter who runs the show lah, all sing the same tune, governed by those you know who

Not only TODAY, many Singapore newspaper also making losses. Who want to keep putting advertisement in these pap-run newspaper? Not that they are the world best media or anywhere near the middle ranking. Everyday we read pap messages, we see them criticising people, opposition and now the world as if every one owed them and we were the guilty lot. I think internet business is more profitable than those sitting inside Toa Payoh offices waiting for their master's instruction.
