Plane explodes over Indonesia - report

A plane has exploded over Batam in Indonesia en route to Singapore, according to Indonesian media reports, and there are fears it may have been a commerical jet.

The reports of the explosion which occurred at 9.15am local time are sketchy and the type of plane unconfirmed.

But local media is speculating that some of the debris that fell to the ground was from a Qantas jet.

This report is unconfirmed.

Kompas, a leading Indonesia newspaper, has reported on its website that it was "suspected that a Qantas plane exploded in the air near Batam".

"The big explosion happened near Hang Nadim airport," the report continued, adding the plane was heading to Singapore.

The website report provided no source for the story.

An eyewitness, Hana, told Indonesia's Metro television that she saw a plane that was on fire overhead before hearing a loud explosion.

Airliner crashes in Indonesia - report

A commercial airliner bound for Singapore has reportedly crashed in western Indonesia.

There are fears it may have been a Qantas jet.

Reuters is quoting Indonesian TV as saying the plane is a Qantas Airbus 380.

Police and witnesses say they heard an explosion as a commercial airliner was flying over western Indonesia and found debris from the plane scattered near a shopping mall.

Police Col Eka Yudha told Indonesia's TVOne the plane was a Qantas Airbus, which was flying from Singapore to Australia when it had to dump fuel.

He was quoted as telling the station it had made an emergency landing, but later told The Associated Press the jetliner was apparently still circling the sky.

The report could not be independently confirmed.

Large pieces of debris - including panels painted white and red - were found on the Indonesian island of Batam, where witnesses reported hearing the loud bang.

The Jakarta Post website is reporting a loud explosion was heard at Hang Nadim airport in Batam.

Batam is in the Riau Islands province of Indonesia, located 20km off Singapore's south coast.

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Police and witnesses say they heard an explosion as a commercial airliner was flying over western Indonesia and found debris from the plane scattered near a shopping mall.

Police Col Eka Yudha told TVOne the plane was a Qantas Airbus, which was flying from Singapore to Australia when it had to dump fuel.

He was quoted as telling the station it had made an emergency landing, but later told The Associated Press the jetliner was apparently still circling the sky.

The report could not be independently confirmed.

Large pieces of debris - including panels painted white and red - were found on the Indonesian island of Batam, where witnesses reported hearing the loud bang early Thursday.

Qantas Airways Ltd. (QAN) Thursday said an engine failed
on one of its Airbus A380 super jumbos, in one of the first major commercial
technical problems the landmark European aircraft has suffered since coming
into service.

The plane, flight QF32, was enroute from Singapore to Sydney, and shut down
an engine after developing technical problems, a spokesperson said. The plane will make an emergency landing in Singapore.

A380 have four engines. Even if 2 engine fail still will able to land.

A Qantas passenger jet rumoured to have crashed in Singapore has landed safely.

Flight QF 32 suffered "non-serious mechanical issues" while en-route to Sydney and has now landed at Changi Airport.

A Qantas spokesperson said pilots turned off one of the Airbus A380's four engines but could not say why.

Police Col Eka Yudha was quoted on Indonesia's TVOne as saying the plane, capable of carrying up to 500 passengers, began dumping fuel before attempting an emergency landing.

Witnesses reported hearing an explosion as the jet flew overhead.

Tatang Kurnia, head of Indonesia's Transportation Safety Board, said the explosion came from a Qantas plane that had just lifted off from Singapore.

"We've been informed from Singapore that a Qantas plane overflying the area defuelled and then made an emergency landing back in Singapore," Mr Kurnia MetroTV.

There were rumours debris had been found on the island of Batam, about 20km off Singapore's south coast.

There seems to be confusion in this news report. The airplane landed safely in singapore while there were reports of mid air explosion and debris found in indonesia.

The plane has landed safely in Singapore but one of the engines exploded and crashed onto Batam . No joke.

The eagerness to provide 1st hand info, many of these sources do not even bother to verify whether its true or not and just post it to whore viewership. ;)

Saw the photo of the engine, the outer layer all ripped off... really no joke.

Interesting eh, they can also disengage a whole engine in mid air and dump it?

Hopes no casualties on the ground.

they are smart. they dun anyhow dump in sinki city.
they chose batam instead.

Now, got a good look at the picture from CNN, only the outer crust of the engine fell out, probably due to explosion. Thought the plane can disengage it's engine, I'm so wrong. :D
