SINGAPORE - Ministers K. Shanmugam and Vivian Balakrishnan said they will sue Mr Lee Hsien Yang for defamation if he does not apologise for having made false allegations.
Mr Shanmugam, who is Law and Home Affairs Minister, said in a Facebook post on Thursday evening that he and Dr Balakrishnan, who is Foreign Minister, had sent lawyers’ letters to Mr Lee on Thursday.
“Lee Hsien Yang has accused us of acting corruptly and for personal gain by having Singapore Land Authority (SLA) give us preferential treatment by illegally felling trees without approval, and also having SLA pay for renovations to 26 and 31 Ridout Road. LHY has an interest to receive the service of the Writ of Summons, as he will want to contest the legal suit if he is sued. By doing nothing, judgment in default will be entered against him.

As long as they know which country he is located, all they need to do is to publish the Writ of Summons on the national papers of that country, and the Singapore Courts will consider it as good service.

The presence of a lawsuit does not affect the eligibility of the EP. It may prevent some people from voting for them. If u are running for EP and have been successfully sued, i think it might disqualify u, But Yang has not announced he is running. If the 2 Thambies are not successful in their lawsuit against Yang (and that is unlikely), then Yang can counter sue for damages and recovery of legal costs. In that case, if he wins, it might disqualify both Thambies from running for EP
