What’s going on?
Dr. Margaret Harris of the WHO said recently that the
COVID-19 vaccine might not have enough power to stop a third wave in parts of Europe,
Al Jazeera reports.
- “Vaccines are a great tool, they will be very helpful, but the effect of the vaccine in providing some kind of immune barrier is still far off.”
- “The things that must be done to prevent an increase, an uptick, a surge or whatever you want to call it are the public health measures,” she added.
Context:
Harris’ comments come as the United Kingdom started its nationwide rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, beginning with Margaret Keenan, a grandmother of four,
NPR reports. The UK will continue to release the vaccine to frontline workers over the next few weeks.
- About 4 million people are expected to receive the vaccine by the end of the month, giving a first look at how a totally approved and tested vaccine can be distributed to a mass population, according to BBC News.
