SINGAPORE: The Singapore government is currently in talks with Marina Bay Sands over the integrated resort's announced delay.

Another issue is a possible staff shortage as observers note Singaporeans tend to shy away from the gaming industry.

The Marina Bay Sands integrated resort's opening has been pushed back to early next year. But with contractual obligations and Singapore's tourism sector at stake, the government is working with Sands to find a solution.

Senior Minister of State, Trade and Industry, S Iswaran, said: "If there is a contractual obligation and if there is a deviation, then I think both parties must agree that it is on a mutually agreed basis. So STB and other government agencies are in discussions with them and we expect to have a good outcome."

The minister declined to comment on whether there would be any penalties imposed on Marina Bay Sands for the delay.

Staffing problems could also add to it as Singaporeans generally seem to be avoiding gaming jobs.

Ang Hin Kee, CEO, Employment and Employability Institute, said: "Not as many people have come forward because when we ask them, they say, 'Don't you need training, don't you need to learn how to do this job?' So they are a little bit conservative even though you don't need prior experience to do these jobs. But people are a bit hesitant."

Experts also said that there is an issue of familiarity with the industry in Singapore.

Unlike Macau for example, where everyone knows what the gaming industry is about, in Singapore, there is a lack of family or friends who are currently working in that business for people to talk to to find out more.

Observers said the rotating nature of the shift is another reason why some applicants are shunning the sector. However, non-gaming sector jobs at the IRs like retail have seen plenty of applicants. - CNA/vm

They are talking nonsense. Me and my friends had send in all our resumes and no one had received a call from the IR.

I have reliable source working in the HR dept saying that, only the HR staffs are Singaporeans, the IT dept is all from Macau Casino transfer to here, most of the middle and lower management jobs are given to the Philippinos due to their President Arroyo demand to PAP, higher management jobs will go to the Europeans the Ang Mohs, and maybe some lowest class of jobs will reserved for the Singaporeans.

Like cleaning toilets, sweeping floors and clearing plates, these are reserved for Singaporeans. And maybe a few middle management jobs will give to the Singaporeans in case Singaporeans make noise that Casino never employ them, the PAP can bring out some Singaporeans out for photo taking and publish in newspapers for wayang and for show, saying PAP government really care for the local Singaporeans.

This is total BULLSHIT!!!! Blaming Singaporean again and hoping to bring in more cheap labour from overseas.

If you were to look at their hiring criteria, it made their jobs totally impossible to apply.

Basically the IR management needs someone who has casino experiences for a number of years. So where on earth to find Singaporean with such experience when this is our first Casino in Singapore?

Than they wanted candidate to have hands on knowledge in certain casino software, operate certain casino machines and many other junior jobs require a basic degree qualitification.

If casino operators are less choosy and more sincere in recruiting staff, they should at least set criterias that are not impossible to meet and offer training since Singaporeans have never been in this field before.

It is illogical to blame Singaporean for not wanting the job and than look overseas for someone who are cheap without any experience too.

Singapore has been short-changed for keep creating jobs for foreigners and leave local jobless. Look at carrefeur, almost half of the staff force are foreigners too.

Yes I have also heard from others that they dont even get a reply after sending applications.

That is why FTs are so important to MIW and CITIZENS are 2nd class in their own country.

I hope and I now for sure there are NEW CITIZENS that can se what is happening and they are NOT VOTING for the MIWs
