Break-ins at industrial estates
By Leow Si Wan
A SPATE of break-ins have hit several industrial estates here.
While exact figures are unavailable, the police are concerned about the increase in crimes at estates, including Geylang East, Ubi, Depot Lane, Defu Lane, Woodlands Terrace and Bukit Batok Street 23, since beginning of this year.
Mr Xu Jin Fu, 60, owner of Joo Hwa Hardware Pte Ltd located in Defu Lane, said break-ins have become more common this year compared to previous years, with him getting wind of news about break-ins 'every other week'.
On two separate occasions, three shops at the ground level of Block 3024, Ubi Road 3, were broken into. Bright Electrical Hardware Enterprise was one of them. It was broken into last month and cash of nearly $10,000 was stolen.
Hock Huat Tyre Battery Services had their entire steel door unhinged.
The police have taken steps to address the situation - increasing patrols and distributing letters alerting business owners about the spate of robberies.
Tenants are also making sure they do not continue being easy targets.
And although Loyang industrial estate was not one of those badly hit by break-ins, the tenants are taking new precautions after warnings by police about industrial theft and robbery which took place in the estate.
International Aerospace Tubes-Asia Pte Ltd has issued its own advisory telling employees to be alert of their surroundings and to be accompanied especially after night fall.
