Boys pretend to be possessed by gods to trick girl into sex

By Elena Chong

FOUR boys pretended they were possessed by gods in order to trick a teenage girl into performing sex acts on them, a court heard.

The victim, aged 14 at the time, was told she would receive divine punishment if she did not carry out the wishes of her alleged attackers, one of whom was only 12.

She was also raped by the ringleader, who came up with the scheme after he was inspired by seeing worshippers at a Chinese temple becoming 'possessed'.

The school dropout, who cannot be named to protect the girl's identity, attacked her on a staircase landing.

He told her the 'Chinese God of Hell' wanted to have sex with her and would kill all her friends if she refused.

The court heard he came up with the plan to trick the girl in February 2008.

Dropout pretended to be possessed to rape girls
By Shaffiq Alkhatib | Posted: 05 August 2011 2121 hrs

SINGAPORE: He was 14 when he masterminded a plan with three friends to trick two girls into performing sexual acts.

The boys, who were then between 12 and 15 years old, pretended to be possessed by "Chinese gods", forcing the girls to do their bidding.

The mastermind pleaded guilty in July to two counts of rape and another two for sexual assault by penetration.

Eight other charges for offences including rape and molest will be taken into consideration during sentencing.

The youngsters will not be named due to a gag order.

The boys used to be friends with their victims, who were then 14 and 15 years old.

The court heard that the mastermind, now a 17-year-old old dropout, was inspired by what he saw at a Chinese temple he used to frequent as a child and decided to pretend to be possessed by "the Chinese god of hell" to trick the girls.

He shared the plan with his friends who agreed to carry it out.

The mastermind then invited all five youngsters to his flat sometime in February or March 2008 where the plan swung into action.

He brought them into his bedroom and pretended to be possessed by jumping around and rocking the chair he was in.

His accomplices did likewise to scare the two girls who were ordered to strip.

The mastermind then grabbed one of the girls and warned her the "Chinese god" would harm her and her loved ones if she disobeyed.

And after she removed her clothes out of fear, he forced her to perform a sexual act on him before raping her.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kavita Uthrapathy said the girl was silent throughout her ordeal as she truly believed the boy was possessed.

From then until April 2008, the boy used the same tactic to deceive both girls into performing sexual acts on him and his friends.

Only the mastermind and his youngest accomplice have been convicted of their offences.

The youngest boy, who is now 16 years old, was given 24 months probation in the Juvenile Court this June.

The cases involving the two other youngsters are now at the pre-trial conference stage.

DPP Kavita has pressed for the mastermind to be jailed and caned despite his age and clean record prior to the case.

She recognised that as far as possible, first-time young offenders under 21 years old should be kept out of prison, with the idea of rehabilitation as an important sentencing consideration.

But the prosecution felt the boy's offences were so serious that "the principle of deterrence should take centre-stage".

The mastermind is represented by lawyer Josephus Tan and the case will be mentioned again on September 9.

The boy could be jailed up to 20 years and fined or caned for each rape charge.

Teen gets probation for forcing friend to perform oral sex

Posted: 31 January 2012 1240 hrs

SINGAPORE: An 18-year-old has been sentenced to 21-months' probation for forcing his female friend to perform oral sex on him.

Both the boy and victim were in Secondary 3 when he committed the offence at a staircase landing of a HDB block in early 2008.

The boy had three accomplices, all of whom have also been accused of the same offence.

The Court heard that the victim, her best friend and the four boys used to hang out after school.

However, when the victim rejected a boy's interest in her, another boy hatched a plan to trick the two girls.

Between February and April 2008, the boys pretended to be possessed by "Chinese gods and ghosts" to frighten the victim into complying with their instructions.

They told her that the "Chinese god of hell" would hurt her and all her friends if she did not perform oral sex on them.

The victim cried after the assault and begged the boys to let her go home as she had "already pleased the 'god' by doing what they asked her to do".

According to court papers, she suffered serious trauma after the incident and had to seek professional help to deal with her depression, anxiety and insomnia.

Defence lawyer Lee Teck Leng said his client was not the "ring leader" and was only "acting on instructions".

He said the boy has a low IQ of 73, which puts his intelligence at the "borderline range", and a psychiatric assessment showed he was "vulnerable to the influence of negative peers".

In pleading for leniency, Mr Lee said people with low IQ may not fully comprehend the illegality and seriousness of what they are doing.

In addition to probation, the boy has to perform 150 hours of community service and his parents have to post a bond of S$5,000 to ensure his good behaviour.

The other boys are scheduled to be sentenced at a later date.

Teen gets reformative training for raping schoolmate

By Claire Huang | Posted: 29 March 2012 1238 hrs

SINGAPORE: An 18-year-old boy who raped his good friend four years ago has been sent for reformative training.

He will spend between 18 months and three years at the reformative centre.

The court heard that in February and March 2008, the boy, who was then 14, pretended to be possessed by the "Chinese god of hell".

He told his then-good friend, a 14-year-old schoolmate, that if she didn't comply and have sex with him, she and her friends would be punished by the "god".

He and three other boys used the tactic to get the girls to perform sexual acts on him and his friends on several occasions.

The youngsters cannot be named.

The 18-year-old boy pleaded guilty last year to two counts of rape.

On each count, the highest penalty is 20 years' jail, fine or caning.

In sentencing, the district judge said the offences were committed when the accused was 14.

While probation is usually recommended for young offenders, he said it's not the case here.

The district judge added that the prosecution had urged the court to give a custodial sentence and caning, but he thought this was "excessive".

Still, the judge said these are serious offences and the law does not allow probation to be called in these cases.

He said the community's interest must be kept so he ordered the teenager to be sent for reformative training.

Another boy involved in the case is expected to be sentenced on Friday.

Teenager in "Chinese God of Hell" rapes sent for reformative training

By Claire Huang | Posted: 20 April 2012 1302 hrs

SINGAPORE: An 18-year-old teenager, who pretended to be possessed by the "Chinese God of Hell" so he could commit rape, has been sent for reformative training.

He will spend between 18 months and three years at the reformative training centre (RTC).

The teenager was 14 at the time of the offences.

He had pleaded guilty in 2011 to two counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault by penetration committed between February and April 2008. Eight other charges were taken into consideration.

On each count, he could have been jailed up to 20 years, fined or caned.

Court documents showed that the teenager was inspired by what he saw at a Chinese temple he used to frequent as a child.

At the time of the offence, the accused had shown interest in one of the two victims, but she rejected him.

So he decided to pretend to be possessed by the "Chinese God of Hell" to trick the two girls and force them into submission.

He told the Secondary 3 girls that if they did not comply and have sex with him, their friends would be punished by the "God".

The accused and three other friends, who were 12, 14 and 15 years of age then, used the tactic to get the girls to perform sexual acts on them on several occasions.

In sentencing, district judge Roy Neighbour said the accused was proven mentally and physically fit for reformative training, so the teenager was ordered to be sent to RTC.

Besides these charges, the accused also faces prosecution for traffic offences.

He was charged on Wednesday for driving without a valid licence, driving without valid motor insurance, dangerous driving and failure to render help after an accident.

As for the other three boys, two have been put on probation, while the third has also been sent for reformative training.
