SINGAPORE-RUSSIA ties took another significant step forward yesterday with plans to set up a joint commission to promote cooperation.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his Singapore host, President S R Nathan, discussed establishing an inter-governmental commission to give impetus to fast-growing bilateral relations, during talks at the Istana.
The commission, to be co-chaired at a high level, is expected to explore and promote broad-based cooperation in various fields, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in statement after their talks.
Mr Medvedev is here on a state visit, the first by a Russian president.
Speaking on the matter at a banquet hosted by Mr Nathan, he said the commission was just the start of deepening of links between the two sides.
'It is the first stage of our cooperation,' he said, speaking in Russian. 'I believe that in the nearest future, it will give new momentum to further strengthening of ties in many areas, including long-term investment and technology-sharing.'
The agreement marks the culmination of years of warming ties. During this time, leaders from the two countries have exchanged visits.
