Basic Military Training Centre recruits were seen wearing the new 'digital camouflage' uniforms at the SAF ferry terminal yesterday. -- ST PHOTO: ASHLEIGH SIM

<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->
NEW recruits are among the first Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) servicemen to wear the new 'digital camouflage' uniforms.

More than 1,000 recruits from the Basic Military Training Centre were seen yesterday wearing the pixellated uniforms, more than three months after they were unveiled. The recruits were released from their Pulau Tekong camp for the Christmas break.
The new uniforms will be phased in over the next three years, with recruits, active servicemen and some national servicemen (NSmen) already receiving them. By 2011, all NSmen will be wearing the new fatigues. There are about 300,000 active and operationally ready NSmen here.
The new-look combat fatigues, commonly known as the No. 4, bear tiny pixels that create a 'quivering effect' on the eye. This will make it harder for a soldier to be seen at distances of less than 50m.
The Defence Ministry said the new uniforms will meet the varying demands of the areas where Third Generation SAF soldiers operate and improve their ability to survive on the battlefield. The new fabric is also cooler and more comfortable. Full-time national serviceman Seah Jun Jie, 21, said: 'Even when we were training and perspiring under the hot sun, the fabric dried very fast - it felt as though I was wearing a T-shirt.'

Pixellated? Quivering effect on the eye? Yes it does that. At a distance of up to 3 meters. How effective is that?

From a distance, it look no different from the first plain green uniforms of the SAF. And wait to see whether this batch of uniform will fade after sometime, that will confirm whether any hanky panky had going on in Logistics, Mindef! It happened before in the 80's with the first batch of No 4 cammies. When that happens, a soldier may as well wear a clown suit, he'll be less easier to detect!

This is just the continuation of the MIW culture of sniffing Uncle Sam's arse! If US Marines were to have the Playboy tie around their necks, SAF will not be far behind including that in the No 4 as well!..............:mad::mad::mad:

If you look at the past uniforms, the 1G Olive green uniform makes the common soldier looks nerdy and under nourished. Couple with the stupid heavy canvas khaki webbing that will cut your skin in every which way you move. What we have now is much much better variant.

Its true whether the quality of the uniform be compromise is worth debating as the initial batch will always be the cream batch worth for show. Vendors normally can't up keep quality without compromising costs along the line.

The 80s "newspaper "cammy has been the notoriety of all lau jiaos.
They would retain that pair even if they were issued new ones. As it normally symbolised their seniority in service. In a few reservist execercise I recalled, that 80s cammy were literally washed to ash white and it stuck out like a sore thumb in the bushes.

It's so easy to effect the "Lau Jiaos" uniform looks even with new cammies. Just "Chlorox" the damn things but add it in incrementally, if not the material will just disintegrate! and you will have that look. As long as the material is breathable, it'll work!:smile:

Can ask if they sell the fabric too? I'm thinking of making a kilt out of it. Already have one in the old camo pattern. Definitely NOT in fashion...

Our No 4 pattern for bermudas? Hic ! all my unused sets I donate to my Indonesian maid who may have better use for clothing back home. I dont even want to wear that fxxxxxx pattern anymore. I rather wear my realtree pattern when the situation requires.

What we really need are pixellated aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines! We should also stockpile ICBMs and nuclear warheads! The next world war is not that far off.
