Oscar Pistorius 'shoots girlfriend'

South African Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius is alleged to have accidentally shot dead his girlfriend, local media reports say.

Pistorious had shot her in the head and arm, the reports suggested. A police source told Reuters news agency a dead woman had been found at his home.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear. Reports say that he may have mistaken her for a burglar.

The 26-year-old was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics.

From law graduate to reality TV star: FHM model Reeva Steenkamp was about to 'explode into the media', claims devastated agent
She had a law degree under her belt, enjoyed immense success as a top model and was dating one of the most famous athletes in the world.

But the girlfriend of 'Blade Runner' Oscar Pistorius had her promising young life cut tragically short today after she was allegedly shot dead by the Paralympian at his mansion.

Reeva Steenkamp, 30, was about to embark on the next stage of her dynamic and varied career, this time as a TV star, when she was killed in what early reports suggested was a Valentine's Day surprise that went horribly wrong.

She was shot in the head, the chest and the arm at around 4am this morning, South African police have said.

Pistorius, who reportedly may have mistaken her for a burglar, has been charged with her murder.

Miss Steenkamp's publicist, Sarit Tomlinson, said the couple had been together for a 'couple of months' in what had been a 'healthy, fabulous relationship'.

She told Sky News: ‘She was the sweetest human being and an absolute angel on earth. She was the kindest, most unbelievable girl.

'At the moment it’s shocking. No-one knows what’s happened. She was a rising star.

'There was so much in the pipeline for her: she was just about to explode into the media.

‘She was a very talented, very bright young girl. It’s too shocking for words.

'It is a huge loss for everyone and our condolences go out to her family. It is about them right now.'

Miss Steenkamp was born in Cape Town on August 19, 1983, and moved to Port Elizabeth as a child.

She graduated with a law degree, but made a dynamic career change after being scouted and named the first face of cosmetics giant Avon South Africa.

She moved to Johannesburg six years ago and since then has travelled between the city and Cape Town to film and shoot some of South Africa's leading campaigns and commercials.

Toyota, FHM, Clover and Italian brand Zui are some of the more prestigious clients she has worked for.

Inside Oscar's bedroom: One cricket bat, baseball bat, revolver and machine gun

Weapons needed to protect home in country plagued by violent crime
More than 7,000 ‘home invasion robberies’ in Gauteng Province alone in 2011
Pistorius told Sportsmail of worries about home robbery
Guards patrol Pistorius’ home ‘but sometimes are in on crimes’
Tragic incident in a life marked by poignancy, heartache and triumph

Each day he was at home in Pretoria, Oscar Pistorius drove up to the gates of his guarded estate, waved to the sentries and with a quick, 'thanks cuz' drove one his cherished fast cars into the garage of his bachelor pad.

Usually his caretaker Frankie would be there polishing or washing to keep the place immaculate.
In Oscar's bedroom lay one cricket bat and one baseball bat behind the door, a revolver by his bed and a machine gun by the window.
But most bone-freezing are what are called home invasion robberies. They are preferably carried out when the occupant is in, meaning the alarm is off and the intruders can be told where the valuables are kept.

In 2011, the year I visited Oscar, there were 7,039 reported home invasion robberies in the Gauteng Province alone – the area that covers Johannesburg and Pretoria, the cities in which he was born and lived.

Yes, he is hidden away on the Silverwoods estate on the eastern outskirts of Pretoria and is protected by armed guards round the clock, but as he told me: ‘The problem is when the guards are in on the crime. It’s usually safe in guarded estates like this until that happens.’

It is from this crazy world that somehow Pistorius reportedly shot dead his girlfriend, whom he had mistaken for an intruder, in the early hours of this morning. Initial reports claim that she was trying to surprise him for Valentine’s Day.
In this vast and beautiful land of post-apartheid South Africa there is too often a gun at the end of their Rainbow. Of the 30-plus nations I have visited representing the Daily Mail none – even the favela areas of Rio and Sao Paulo and the night streets of Kingston, Jamaica – holds the same fear as South Africa. Violent crime, often confrontational, is a staple of South African life: there are burglaries, carjackings, street muggings, smash-and-grabs and planned attacks on shopping malls.

Oscar Pistorius 'shot Reeva Steenkamp in bathroom'

Details of the prosecution's case against Mr Pistorius, accused of the premeditated murder of Reeva Steenkamp, emerged at a bail hearing in Pretoria.

He wept as he heard the account, but his lawyers said the killing was "not even murder".

The hearing came as the victim's family held a private funeral.

Friends and relatives hugged each other at the start of the service for the 29-year-old former model in her home town of Port Elizabeth.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel told the court that on the night of the killing Mr Pistorius - a double amputee - got up, put on his prostheses, walked seven metres and fired his gun through the bathroom door.

He shot four times and hit Ms Steenkamp three times, he said. The defendant later broke down the bathroom door and carried the victim downstairs, Mr Nel added.

Defence lawyer Barry Roux told the court his client did not know in advance who was behind the door.

He said the prosecution had provided "no evidence of premeditated murder", and that it was not even murder.

Mr Pistorius was sobbing as his lawyer spoke, the BBC's Andrew Harding reports from the courtroom.

After hearing argument from both sides the magistrate ruled that Mr Pistorius should indeed face a charge under the so-called "Schedule 6", or premeditated murder.

His family held each other and prayed during as the court went into recess, our correspondent added.

The judge reserved the right to downgrade that ruling at any time, but Mr Pistorius' legal team will now need to prove he deserves bail despite facing the most serious charge.

Following Thursday's killing there was media speculation that Ms Steenkamp had been mistaken for an intruder, but police rejected that possibility.

Mr Pistorius has been held in a cell at a police station Pretoria since his arrest on Thursday. He could face life imprisonment if found guilty.

Ms Steenkamp's relatives spoke of their grief in a newspaper interview published on Monday.

Her skull was smashed in by a cricket bat and then topped off with 4 bullets into her bod.

The murderer is truly a monster.
