SINGAPORE : Some 800 passengers were asked to leave an MRT train they were in on Sunday evening, when a loud sound was heard and sparks were seen coming from under the train carriage.

SMRT said the train was pulling into the Tanah Merah Station at around 9.20pm when the incident happened.

But the noise and sparks ceased when the train came to a stop at the station.

As a precaution, the passengers were asked to alight, and the Singapore Civil Defence Force called in to assist.

SMRT said westbound services through Tanah Merah Station were not affected, as trains were routed through the middle track instead of the usual westbound track.

No one was injured. SMRT is investigating the incident.
