Allies turn on Biden over ‘zero dollars’ tweet

US President Joe Biden has urged lawmakers to support his…
Analysts and politicians in the US have called out President Joe Biden for tweeting that his Build Back Better plan “costs zero dollars”, with one of his supporters going so far as to call his claim false.

Mr Biden’s $US3.5 trillion ($4.8 trillion) Build Back Better domestic plan aims to create jobs and lower costs for working families, largely funded by raising taxes on wealthy Americans and large corporations.

However, Republicans have ripped the reconciliation package as a massive bill that one critic said “ultimately provides benefits to wealthy liberal elites at the expense of working-class families”.

Moderate Democrats, like Senators Kyrsten Sinema from Arizona and Joe Manchin, from West Virginia, and Representative Stephanie Murphy from Florida, have also raised concerns about the reconciliation package, the latter noting the bill lacks cost analysis by the Congressional Budget Office.

“I don’t think we can afford everything,” Ms Murphy said. “Unless something changes, I have no choice but to vote no on every subtitle (in the bill) and on final passage.”

In the midst of the Democrats’ infighting, Mr Biden argued his social spending bill was an “investment in working America” and will cost nothing.

“My Build Back Better Agenda costs zero dollars,” Mr Biden’s account tweeted on Saturday. “Instead of wasting money on tax breaks, loopholes, and tax evasion for big corporations and the wealthy, we can make a once-in-a-generation investment in working America. And it adds zero dollars to the national debt.”

Even some who support Mr Biden’s agenda questioned his recent message.

Mr Biden and his communications office were accused of telling a “lie”, with some arguing that despite his pledge, the President’s agenda will be costly and a burden on the middle class.

“I have to admit, I thought this was from a parody account when I first read it,” New York Republican Representative Claudia Tenney added in a follow-up tweet.

“It was disturbing to see it was actually from our President. He thinks he can spend an unprecedented $3.5 trillion and not add a penny to the debt? This is who is in charge? Scary.”

“Your comms person is ‘economically illiterate,’” Erielle Davidson, senior policy analyst at The Jewish Institute for National Security of America, said.

Others added Mr Biden’s tweet to the growing list of misleading narratives pushed by the administration.

Some urged the fact checkers to get to work, but didn’t hold their breath.

Moderate Democrats are pushing for a smaller bill around $US1.5 trillion to $US2 trillion ($A2 trillion to $A2.8 trillion). Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, has not shut down those attempts, but wondered where they would make cuts.

“Where would you cut?” she asked. “Child care? Family medical leave pay-fors? Universal pre-K? Home health care?”
