Hydrogen is already tested on planes. For the same plane, the mileage is only 1/3 of jet fuels, so they can't fly full-load too far.

They couldn't store hydrogen in liquid form currently on planes. Storing hydrogen to liquid requires vast amount of pressure or super cooling to -253 dec C.

Steam engine was water powered if you think sbout it. Eventually replaced by internal. Combustion engine.
