Singapore was greeted with the sound of booming thunder early this morning (Sep 26), and when it started pouring, parts of the island got hit by flash floods as drains struggled to cope with the sudden increase in volume of water.

As a result, some areas, such as those in the Tiong Bahru area, were severely affected, as drivers slowly inched their way through knee-high levels.

MRT commuters were not spared as well, as those at the Orchard Station can attest, as they were greeted with the sight of water flowing down the steps.

STOMP did a check with the NEA website and the 12-hour forecast from mid-day 26-09-2008 till midnight is that it will be cloudy with occasional light rain over many areas in the early afternoon.

The temperature will range from 25 to 28 degrees Celsius with relative humidity between 65 to 95 per cent.

The NEA says it was the convergence of winds and influence of a typhoon near the Phillipines which caused the heavy rain today. Read its response here.

Here are the contributions sent in by STOMPers. Also, tell us how you were inconvenienced as a result of the pouring rain.

In the meantime, keep updated on the weather at these links:

A STOMPer saw this canal at Tiong Bahru overflowing, and says she even saw a tree fall as a result of the heavy rain today (Sep 26).

Gina told STOMP in her email:

"It was raining heavily since 6 plus in the morning, and by about 7 plus, the area around the canal in Boon Tiong Road was flooded!

"Also, we witnessed a tree falling down. The pictures were taken minutes after the tree fell. The flats shown in the pictures are taken at the Global Residence at Tiong Bahru."

As a result of the heavy downpour on Sep 26, drivers had to slowly make their way through flooded Tiong Bahru, as seen in this picture.

Bernard Teo reported:

"I will like to share some pictures of the flooding that occured at Tiong Bahru after this morning's heavy downpour.

"The pictures are taken from my place at Boon Tiong Road. The first picture shows that this section of Tiong Bahru Road was flooded and literally unpassable to cars 10 minutes before these pictures were taken, accordingly to my mum. By the time this picture was taken, there was some receding of the flood water and cars can slowly pass through one at a time.

"The 2nd picture shows the canal along Boon Tiong Road overflowing its banks and trapping residents of Global Residents at Tiong Bahru.

"This is the first time I have seen canal overflowing eversince I moved into the area 3 years ago.

"I am wondering if the authorities can consider increasing the capacity of the stormwater drainage system in this area in view of more and heavier torrential downpours due to the effect of global warming in the years to come. It will help to minimise the incovenience caused to the residents living in this area."

This has nothing to do with the PAP . PAP is good.

Neo-Confucianists like LKY must know that floods are one of the indications that his mandate from heaven has been withdrawn and that his time is almost up. That probably was why he spent so much money creating the recently operational Marina Barrage which was supposed to prevent precisely such floods.

Despite all that effort though the floods came....
