SINGAPORE: More households are being infested with bed bugs, said the Singapore Pest Management Association.

The association said it has been getting one to two calls island-wide every week to get rid of the bugs.

Five years ago, such calls only came once or twice a month.

A resident in Block 51 of Chin Swee Road said authorities had helped him get rid of the bed bugs last year, but the bugs returned after four months.

Tanjong Pagar Member of Parliament Dr Lily Neo told Channel NewsAsia her town council will do a thorough check to see if pest control services need to be stepped up.

The Association said that bed bug extermination usually requires three treatments as one treatment is not adequate.

Ng Say Kiat, vice-president of the Singapore Pest Management Association, said: "It's become more common because I think there is an increase of international travelling... the increase of the use of recycled wood, like recycled furniture items and so on. So all this actually encourages the breeding of bed bugs, especially (so for) people who have poor hygiene and housekeeping habits."

Some of the reasons: Too many people in one room. No cleaning. No sunshine. Room filled with all sorts of garbages. The elderly stay in bed especially those bed-ridden. New comers come and live like a dormitory. New arrivals with their new habits.

Another new trend...the rise of TB!!! Please be careful.

Not just in Singapore. NY, Los Angeles, London. There were articles in NY Times and L.A. Times about increasing cases of bedbugs and skin diseases like Scabies. If you do a Search, I am sure you can find the articles. Like the man says, due to increased Travelling, more mobile Population, etc., etc.

I think we are getting more and more crowded and congested. Too much squeezing in a small area.

Once infested, they are hard to get rid of. They also hide in bedsprings, rattan weaved chairs, and in-seams. Real pests!
If you come back from infested hotels, be sure to wrap your luggage bags in plastic bags and seal them before pulling them into yr house. Then have them fumigated and sprayed before unpacking.

Cheap solution, just use the 'chalk' to draw lines along edge of mattress. Any bugs touching the chalk dies. Available from any supermart.

These chalk work wonders against cockroaches and ants etc...
Never had chance to try against bedbugs, also had concerns if they are harmful to humans are the one I used was from china.

Bed bugs thrive in dirty conditions. As long as yr hygiene and cleanliness is up to mark, there shldnt be bed bugs. Bed linens shld be washed frequently, pillows and even mattresses shld be changed periodically.

Or move house.

Nothing to do with hygiene or dirty slummy conditions. Acc to reports, even 7 star hotels in NY have them. they are not bred from dirty conditions, but passed from person to person via media in which we spent more hours in a day - the bed and the clothes.

For that, we can only thank the Global Ah nehs who live in shit holes and in extremely crowded cities. Ignore the pest control people, tell them and you can hear money jingling in their brains. If you go to Mustafa center, there is a shelf dedicated to clearing them. There is all kinds of solutions, from nuking your suitcase when you travel back from overseas to spraying your house with some awful smelly stuff.
Bedbugs 1. Mankind 0.

Yes agree. Just like hair lice its not hygiene related.

Use Delphin vaccum cleaner. Approach any of the sale representative for a free demo and ask them to clean your bed and sofa.
