As country coordinator of ASEAN-China relations, Singapore will focus on the formulation of the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea, said Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan on Saturday (Feb 27).

Speaking to the media in an interview after the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' retreat in Vientiane, Laos, Dr Balakrishnan said that ASEAN foreign ministers had reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability in the disputed waters, and called for self-restraint in the conduct of activities.

Don't think china is very keen on code of conduct for the reason they had a code of conduct declaration some time in 2000. Though it non binding, China kept to her side of promise but other claimants like Vietnam and Malaysia just simply ignored it and carried out oil explorations in disputed areas.

Secondly a binding code of conduct if it doesn't include USA is of no use. When you have a treaty to restrain Chinese actions but nothing to restrain US naval activities. China will have no means to counter US latest naval deployment in the region. Why should china be so stupid to tie her own hands in face of US millitary transgression?

I doubt so. The US navy has the new rail gun. I think it can shoot down the dongfeng missiles before you can say '11 Jinping'. The SAF should send a contingent to join the 8-Nations Expeditionary Force. There would be lots of loot and women waiting to be plundered in Peking.
