Jailed for false 'kidnap' report <!--10 min-->

A BANGLADESHI construction worker cooked up a story that he had been kidnapped as he did not want his employer to be angry with him for not turning up for work for several days. Md Sirajul Islam Md Hazrat Ali, 32, was jailed for one week on Thursday after he admitted giving false information to the police on Oct 4 that he had been abducted by four male Indians and his brother had to pay a ransom of $3,000 for his release. The court heard that Sirajul did not turn up for work on Sept 28 and told his employer, Mr Yap Kok Leong, 46, that he was not feeling well. When he still did not report for work three days later, Mr Yap reported him missing. Sirajul remained uncontactable as he had switched off his cellphone. When he switched on his mobile on Oct 4, he received an SMS from his younger brother, Mr Selim Hazrat Ali, 31 that everyone was looking for him. He decided to concoct the kidnap story. District Judge Shaiffudin Saruwan told him that he had committed a very serious offence, and that he could not do this with impunity.
