Choice roles

From modelling in Malaysia to acting in Singapore, Teh Choy Wan has been keeping busy. She’s back to host a reality TV show, writes Boey Ping Ping

</td></tr></tbody></table>My dad’s going to be so proud!" thought an ecstatic Teh Choy Wan when she landed her first guest role in popular television sitcom Phua Chu Kang while working in Singapore. Little did she know the scene required her to be killed off. "Imagine that. My first guest role and I had to die in the middle of a real cemetery. It was eerie, but so much fun," the model-cum-actress, television host and emcee recounts.
Versatile
Teh, or Choy as she is commonly known, moved to Singapore with her older twin sister May Wan two years ago to seek greener pastures. There, they were greeted by an unfamiliar work culture. "The ethics were different. It was stricter and more professional. It humbles you because they don’t glorify celebrities. But it keeps you grounded and Singapore is a good training ground."
Although it was tough competing in a highly competitive industry, they found their calling in acting and are currently enjoying fame in the cinemas in Singaporean Royston Tan’s film, 881: The Papaya Sisters. Although the twins don’t play the lead roles of stage performers, the "Papaya Sisters", they do star as their arch-rivals, the "Durian Sisters".
Teh insists she’s nothing like the character she portrays. "I’m not a bitch in real life, not an Ah Lian bitch." But that made the role more challenging, Teh says, explaining: "I like to test myself by taking up roles that are the total opposite of me. I want to be able to show my versatility as an actress by showing a different side of me and what I’m capable of."
What made the part even more tricky was that Teh, who is of Norwegian-Chinese parentage, had to speak in Mandarin and sing in Hokkien. The 26-year-old attended Chinese lessons to perfect her role.
<table align="right" border="0" bordercolor="black" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0"> <tbody> <tr> <td>

</td></tr></tbody></table>At any rate, Teh’s newfound skill may come in useful as she seems keen on furthering her career in China. "The Chinese market is the biggest in Asia. Ever since China opened up, it’s generated a lot of work. Pan-Asians who speak Chinese well are a novelty there and I would like to tap into that," she says.

Teh spent her teenage years in Brisbane, Australia, but made the annual journey home during the summer so she wouldn’t feel homesick. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies and Bachelor of Communication in Public Relations and Marketing, she joined her sister in modelling gigs at home for two years.
Simple pleasures
"I was at a crossroads," Teh explains. "I wanted to have a practical degree that I could use if the need arose. University was all about growing up and opening your mind."
All grown up, Teh is no longer the naive 23-year-old who returned to Malaysia and found fame as part of the "modelling twins". Or the young VJ whose dream band was once the Backstreet Boys and who was over the moon when they offered her passes to watch their concert for free. "I’ve matured. I feel more of a woman. I’ve accepted things and I know what I want from life."
What she wants now is to be happy and to enjoy having her friends and family around her. "Just to enjoy the simple things in life. I’ll be at home baking and I’m happy."
Teh even considered going into a business that involved baking. "Probably cupcakes and cakes because I just love baking and feeding people," says the actress, who spends most of her free time watching reality shows on babies and motherhood. "Whenever I see someone giving birth, I start to cry," she says, making sobbing sounds and wiping away fake tears.
<table align="left" border="0" bordercolor="black" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0"> <tbody> <tr> <td>

</td></tr></tbody></table>Teh still takes to the runway every now and then and makes celebrity appearances at fashion shows, but her choice of clothing
these days seems toned down and doesn’t ooze as much sex appeal as before. She appeared at the interview in an oversized white blouse that did nothing to show off her figure.

A blogger commented that Teh and her sister looked like girls-next-door and nothing like their pictures. With long, straight hair and cheeks subtly covered in tiny freckles, Teh doesn’t look remotely like the dolled-up, sexy, pin-up girl with windswept curls often splashed across the pages of magazines. Not that any of that has affected her popularity as a TV host.
Love potion
NTV7’s offer to Teh to host the second season of Cornetto Love, Perhaps? 2 gave her a reason to return home. "We’ve done so much work in Singapore, May and I decided we should do something in Malaysia too." Like her sister, May is also the host of a reality show currently airing on NTV7 called StarCeleb.
A first-timer at presenting reality TV shows, Teh is anything but nervous about being the compere for Cornetto Love, Perhaps?, which revolves around 10 guys and 10 girls looking for love. "I’m just going to wing it. Because it’s a reality show, nothing’s planned, everything’s spontaneous."
She plans to dish out advice, share her mottos on love (patience and perseverance) and relate her own experiences to help the contestants make the right decision. But the contestants won’t be the only ones looking for love. Even with her good looks, Teh is still single. She admits that a good man is hard to find and says that while some men are intimidated by her, others expect her to do the chasing. "That’s when I say ‘Goodbye. Not talking to you.’"
Teh’s idea of true love is: "Your best friend. Someone you can relate to on every level and cannot stop thinking about day and night. I want to be one of those couples who even after 25 years of marriage still hold hands and do everything together."
Now that the versatile lady has added "reality TV show host" to her ever growing resume which includes gracing magazine covers, modelling stints in Malaysia and
Singapore, TV hosting in Taiwan, and an MTV VJ, will Teh, who admits she loves child-ren meet her true love soon? As the Doris Day classic goes, "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps".
Choy’s style secrets
My make-up routine
"I’m not big on foundation. Just concealer, followed by powder and very importantly mascara to bring out the eyes. Lip gloss to add colour to the lips and blush to perk up the face. And when I’m in a hurry, the retro 50s look – red lipstick and mascara – works really well."
Great tips picked up from make-up artists
"Always have well-groomed eyebrows because they help to frame your face. Get a good reflecting concealer because if you apply this correctly, it’ll really wake up your face. Use it to highlight your cheeks, nose, forehead, and see your face glow.
Best advice from a hair stylist
"Get a good cut, something that doesn’t need much work and falls into place with a simple blow dry. And remember to mask your hair weekly and put some serum on before you blow dry hair to keep it from drying out."
My fashion style
"Comfortable and chic. I don’t over-follow the season. I prefer classic things like a good pair of jeans. I used to buy and end up throwing out a lot of trendy stuff, but you’ve got to be realistic. Now I go for more simple stuff, nothing too overboard."
