Russian passenger jet reported missing in Indonesia

A Russian Sukhoi Superjet 100 passenger plane with 46 people aboard has gone missing on a demonstration flight in Indonesia, reports say.

The plane disappeared from radar screens during a flight from Jakarta meant to last 30 minutes, a blogger with the Sukhoi delegation said.

A helicopter was dispatched to look for the jet, thought to have been flying near a mountain, Sergey Dolya said.

Emergency services confirmed a Sukhoi plane was missing.

The plane, which took off at 07:00 GMT, is believed to have had about four hours' fuel aboard, the BBC's Karishma Vaswani reports from Jakarta.

Gagah Prakoso, spokesman for Indonesia's national search and rescue agency, said 46 people had been aboard the plane, which vanished from radar near Bogor, a city in West Java province.

He told BBC News it was unclear who was on board because they were people invited by Sukhoi, but they were "likely to be reps of Indonesian airlines".

Eight of those are Russians, Dolya tweeted.

As darkness fell, the helicopter search was called off but rescuers continued looking for the plane on the ground, he said.

'Guests aboard'

The plane took off from east Jakarta's Halim Perdanakusuma airport, which is used for some commercial and military flights, at 14:00 (07:00 GMT), the Indonesian search and rescue agency spokesman said.

"At 14:50 it dropped from 10,000ft [3,000m] to 6,000ft," the agency told AFP.

Herry Bakti, head of the transport ministry's aviation division, said the aircraft had been on the second of two demonstration flights, and those on board were invited guests.

The Russian embassy in Jakarta said in a statement earlier this week that a Sukhoi Superjet 100 demonstration would take place in Jakarta on Wednesday, AFP added.

The embassy could not be immediately reached for comment.

The Superjet, a mid-range airliner that can carry up to 100 people, is military plane-maker Sukhoi's first commercial aviation plane.

It was created by a joint venture, majority-owned by Sukhoi, with Italy's Finmeccanica and a number of other foreign and Russian firms also involved.

Gagah Prakoso told the BBC that Sukhoi had been offering the Superjet to Indonesian airlines.

CIDAHU, Indonesia - A helicopter spotted the shattered wreckage of a Russian-made passenger plane Thursday that crashed into a steep cliff on a long-dormant Indonesian volcano during a demonstration flight to potential buyers and journalists. There was no sign of survivors among the 47 people on board.

Family members, many of whom spent a long, sleepless night at the airport, broke down in tears on hearing the news. Others stared blankly ahead in disbelief.

"From the pictures we're seeing, it looks like it was a total loss," said Daryatmo, chief of the national search and rescue agency, as the first images flashed across local TV.

The Sukhoi Superjet-100, Russia's first new passenger jet since the fall of the Soviet Union two decades ago, was scattered on a steep near the top of Mount Salak, a volcano just 30 miles (50 kilometres) southwest of Jakarta. The company's blue-and-white logo peeked through the dense canopy of trees.

The location will hamper efforts to evacuate victims, said Gagah Prakoso, adding they will have to be pulled to a hovering helicopter by ropes and nets.

The plane left Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in the capital Wednesday for a quick test flight aimed at impressing potential buyers.

Twenty-one minutes after takeoff, the crew asked for permission to decline from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet (3,000 metres to 1,800 metres), said Daryatmo, chief of the national search and rescue agency.

The plane fell off the radar immediately afterward.

It was not clear why the Russian pilot and co-pilot asked to drop down, especially when it was so close to the 7,000-foot- (2,200-meter-) high mountain, or if they got the OK.

Tapes between the pilots and air traffic control are being reviewed as part of the investigation, said Tatang Kurniadi, chief of the National Commission on Safety Transportation.

They will not be released to the media any time soon, he said.

More than 1,000 people, including soldiers and police, took part in the search and rescue efforts Thursday.

Eventually,helicopters carrying out aerial surveys spotted the wreckage.

"They have clear view," said Prakoso. "There is no sign of any of the passengers .... We're trying to move in closer to the wreckage now but its reachable only by foot."

Russia's aerospace industry was badly undermined in the economic turmoil following the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

The Superjet — developed by the civil aircraft division of Sukhoi with the co-operation with Western partners — has been widely considered the country's chance to regain a foothold in the international passenger plane market.

Its "Welcome Asia!" tour, which also included stops in Pakistan, Myanmar and Kazakhstan, was intended to drum up support.

Sunaryo from PT. Trimarga Rekatama, the company that helped organize Wednesday's event, said 47 people were on board, many of them potential buyers and journalists.

Among them were eight Russians, all from Sukhoi companies and 37 Indonesians.

An American consultant with Indonesia's PT. Sriwijaya Airline and a Frenchman with aircraft engine-maker Snecma also were on board.

The Superjet — a 75- to 95-seat plane — was being touted as a challenger to similar-sized jets from Canada's Bombardier Inc. and Brazil's Embraer SA.

It made its inaugural commercial flight last year.

"It is their big hope that they will somehow get into the jet aircraft passenger market in a bigger way than they have, because we all know that the Russians have had a dreadful record in the past with their aircraft, so this was vitally important to their industry," said Tom Ballantyne, a Sydney-based aviation expert.

With a relatively low price tag of around $35 million, the plane has garnered around 170 orders. And Indonesia, a sprawling archipelagic nation of 240 million people with a fast-growing middle class, was one of the biggest potential customers.

Kartika Airlines and Sky Aviation — among dozens of airlines to have popped up in Indonesia in the last decade to meet the growing demand for cheap air travel — had already ordered at least 42.

People involved in those plans said they were waiting for the results of the investigation before reconsidering. Most wanted to know whether the problem was mechanical or pilot error.

Indonesia Rescuers Reach Crashed Russia-Made Plane

Indonesian rescuers reached a Russian-made Sukhoi SuperJet 100 that crashed on a remote mountainside yesterday during a promotional flight. There were no signs of survivors among the 45 people onboard.

Authorities will start airlifting the crash victims back to Halim Perdana airport this afternoon, once a helicopter landing site is cleared, Gagah Prakoso, a spokesman for the National Search and Rescue Agency, said at the airport today. About 600 people, including military and police, have been deployed in the search since late yesterday, he said.

The aircraft’s black box is yet to be found and the plane was probably not transmitting signals when it crashed, Prakoso said. The plane disappeared off radar yesterday about 20 minutes after takeoff, while carrying reporters and potential customers.

Russia opened a criminal probe into the crash, Interfax said, citing the country’s Investigative Committee. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev also ordered an investigation by the Industry Ministry, Foreign Ministry and state-controlled planemaker United Aircraft Corp. The SuperJet is spearheading attempts to revive Russia’s aerospace industry, which has languished since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

The wreckage is about 5,800 feet up Mount Salak in West Java, Daryatmo, the head of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, said earlier today. The crash site is about six hours’ walk from the agency’s command post in Cidahu, he said.

The SuperJet disappeared after the crew asked air-traffic control for permission to descend to 6,000 feet from 10,000 feet, he said. The pilots didn’t explain the change of course. The weather was slightly rainy and there were no obvious signs of trouble, he said.

Sales Tour

The plane was on an Asian sales tour, which had included stops in Myanmar, Pakistan and Kazakhstan. Further appearances were planned in Laos and Vietnam, Olga Kayukova, a spokeswoman for Sukhoi owner United Aircraft, said by phone yesterday. The planemaker also intended to send staff to Indonesia to support rescue and investigation efforts.

The twin-engine regional jet, which can carry about 100 people, was developed with Finmeccanica SpA (FNC)’s Alenia Aeronautica SpA. It has an operating range of as much as 4,578 kilometers (2,845 miles). The aircraft is a challenger to regional jets built by Bombardier Inc. (BBD/B) and Embraer SA. (EMBR3), as well as to models being developed by Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China and Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp.

Pre-Flight Checks

Sukhoi said the jet had gone through a full pre-flight check and displayed the “proper technical condition.” There also hadn’t been any problems during an earlier flight the same day, it said in a statement on its website.

The jet was commanded by a “very experienced crew” consisting of Chief Test Pilot Alexander Yablontsev and co-pilot Alexander Kochetkov, it said.

Russia’s aviation industry has sought to overcome the image of outdated aircraft prone to accidents. The country suffered 99 deaths after five jetliner accidents through late September last year, according to the most recent figures available from researcher Ascend Worldwide Ltd.

Following an accident last year when a plane carrying the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team failed to gain altitude, Medvedev, who was then president, said Russia might turn to foreign aircraft producers to ensure safety of air travel.
Russia’s Aging Fleet

The age of Russia’s domestically manufactured single-aisle aircraft fleet is between 25 years and 30 years, while the U.S. fleet averages about 13 years, according to figures published late last year by Ascend, a London-based aviation consultant.

Development (EASTW) and capital costs for the SuperJet were about $1 billion, according to Fairfax, Virginia-based Teal Group, with another $1 billion for the engines and customer support. The list price is $28 million. The plane had 170 orders in total, according to Teal. Sukhoi itself has not disclosed order numbers.

Customers include Armenia’s Armavia and Russia’s flagship airline OAO Aeroflot, and the eight aircraft in service for two carriers have accumulated more than 3,500 flights. PT Sky Aviation, an Indonesian carrier, has ordered 12.

The plane, which seats five abreast, uses engines built by PowerJet, a venture between Snecma, a unit of Safran SA (SAF), and NPO Saturn. Safran’s Messier-Dowty unit also provides the integrated landing gear system, with B/E Aerospace providing the doors. Italy’s Avio provides the gearbox for the propulsion systems and Safran’s Aircelle unit provides the engine nacelles.

making a proper passenger plan need high tech technical know how. that is why french and usa standard of living is high. they made goods that people want and willing to pay a high price for it.

I would stay away from russian plane. because russia do not have the know how. the breakdown of their country in 90 affect their scientist and engineer, basically a lot of them ran away.

I would stay away from russian plane. because russia do not have the know how. the breakdown of their country in 90 affect their scientist and engineer, basically a lot of them ran away.

we are lucky SIA only fly boeing and airbus. Local PRC flights, and local africa flights, i am not so sure, there might be some russian plane around. normally you buy air tickets, you do not know what plane you going to fly.

Until the blackbox is found, we can only make guesses. There has been speculations that the aircraft could have been hijacked. My guess would be that the pilot was not familiar with the Indonesian air space as it was his 2nd flight or he could be doing a manoeuvre to show off the aircraft. Let's wait and see when more news are published.

Alexander Yablontsev, the chief test pilot and Alexander Kochetkov, his co-pilot pose with relaxed-looking flight attendants ahead of a landmark test flight.

The wreckage of the Sukhoi Superjet-100, with 50 people on board, was discovered on Thursday after it crashed 20 minutes after take-off into a jungle-covered dormant volcano.

Helicopters scouring vegetation covered slopes discovered the blue and white wreckage of the Sukhoi Superjet-100, which crashed 20 minutes after take-off from Jakarta on a demonstration flight to drum up business.

Teams of rescuers who battled up the sheer slopes to reach the crash site found no signs of survivors and said that the bodies would have to be placed in nets and winched up to hovering helicopters.

Of the eight crew and 42 guests aboard the jet, most were journalists and potential buyers for the jet which is Russia’s first foray into the burgeoning small passenger jet market since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The Superjet-100, with a passenger capacity of 68 to 103 depending on the configuration, was on the fourth stop of a six-nation Asian tour, and the second flight of the day, when it hit a near-vertical cliff section on 7,000ft Mount Salak, a long-dormant volcano.

Investigators are now examining taped conversations between the pilots and air-traffic control, particularly the pilot’s request to descend from 10,000ft to 6,000ft seconds before the plane disappeared from radar screens.

“The airplane crashed at the edge of Salak mountain,” said Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. “An investigation must be done immediately and thoroughly.” Aerial pictures from the crash scene revealed tiny sections of wreckage from the wings and fuselage scattered down an exposed stretch of cliff surrounded by the dense forest.

Indonesia’s search and rescue agency chief, Daryatmo, said: “From the pictures we’re seeing it looks like it was a total loss.” Sukhoi has already won 170 orders worldwide for its Superjet-100 and was aiming to sell 42 in Indonesia alone, competing against similar-sized offerings in the passenger jet market from Brazil’s Embraer and Canada’s Bombardier.

If the cause of the crash turns out ultimately to be a pilot or air-traffic control error, the effects on sales might not prove too disastrous. But a technical fault in the jet that has already suffered delays could be catastrophic for orders.

Until the blackbox is found, we can only make guesses. There has been speculations that the aircraft could have been hijacked. My guess would be that the pilot was not familiar with the Indonesian air space as it was his 2nd flight or he could be doing a manoeuvre to show off the aircraft.
