Parts fall off China Airlines jet on approach to ATL
ATLANTA -- Federal aviation officials are investigating what caused parts of a Chinese Airline cargo jetet to crash on top of a house in metro Atlanta.
The 747 was on its final approach, when a 20-foot section of the wing crashed to the ground, slamming through the roof of an Ellenwood home.
Out of nowhere, parts of the leading edge of the China Air 747 wing pierced the roof of the home.
There were no injuries and the pilot landed the plane safely at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
But for homeowners in the neighborhood it was frightening.
"We do get probably at least 100 planes a day coming over our house so for something to fall is devastating because we have kids who play in the area, play outside all the time," said Kimberly Johnson, a neighborhood homeowner.
"It's very scary. We all live here and this is where we live and planes fly really low, but it's a very scary situation," added Galen Johnson, another neighborhood homeowner.
Fallen parts from the plane were recovered by investigators and Clayton County police, not only at the Ellenwood home but in a nearby Walmart parking lot.
Although statisticians say the chances of a part falling from a plane are one in 10 million, you can collect if something lands on your home.
"If this happens the homeowner can recover if there is damage done. Things are not supposed to fall off a plane and if they do, it's because someone made a mistake someplace either in the inspection process or a piece of equipment broke and it should not have broken," said David Boone, an Atlanta aviation attorney.
The China 747 is being repaired and inspected and will remain at Hartsfield-Jackson International for several more days.
