Its been coming for some time now. Now its official, lesser and better qualified person would migrate to Australia rather then cooks and hairdresser. More "colleges" is going to close down now. :D

More nurses and teachers are welcome
PETER MARTIN ECONOMICS CORRESPONDENT

Australia is about to become a harder place to get in to if you are a dance instructor, piano tuner, hairdresser or chef.

The Immigration Minister, Chris Evans, has slashed by half the list of 400 occupations given an easy ride into Australia in the independent skilled migration program, replacing them with 180 ''highly valued occupations''.

Still on the list are medical professionals including osteopaths, dentists, surgeons and nurses, as well as engineers, teachers, IT professionals and welders. But off the list from July will be dance instructors, piano tuners and - significantly - hairdressers and cooks.

''In 2007-08 … of the 41,000 general skilled visas granted, more than 5000 went to hairdressers and cooks,'' Senator Evans said. ''…Three-quarters of them had studied in Australia. Our migration program should not be determined by the courses studied by our international students.'' He said the new list, developed by the independent body Skills Australia, would ensure the skilled migration program was demand-driven rather than supply-driven.

''We value the international education sector. Its students will still be able to apply for permanent migration … but we will no longer almost automatically accept the thousands of cooks and hairdressers who applied under the guidelines established by the Howard government."

He flagged the change in February, saying that far more people applied for skilled migration than the 108,000 places available.

''We need the skills that are … in demand … not just those applicants present with. If hospitals are crying out for nurses, they should have priority over … 12,000 unsponsored cooks …''

Skills Australia was set up in 2008 with the express purpose of identifying skills shortages. Its eight-person board includes the head of the Australian Industry Group, Heather Ridout, the president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, Sharan Burrow, and a former head of the Prime Minister's Department, Michael Keating.

It will update the pared-down skills list annually. Senator Evans said students already in Australia intending to apply for permanent residence could take advantage of transition provisions announced in February.

A report released this morning by the economic consultancy BIS Shrapnel finds that population growth is set to slow sharply in response to lower foreign student numbers and a drop in the number of sponsored applicants for short-term work visas.

An Australian Industry Group survey also released today finds 75 per cent of employers are dissatisfied with the skills of their Australian-trained workers, with 45 per cent believing their labourers have worryingly low literacy and numeracy skills and 25 per cent believe their apprentices have low skills.

At least Kevin Rudd is finally doing something right. But still, the people caught up in the credit card skimming crimes are found to be ex-Sri Lankan refugees, one claimed to arrived an ex-boatpeople.

How's that!!!!

It is reported in The West Australian that Sri Lankans are behind some of these card skimming.

In fact. India is a major HQ for card skimming racket.

Alleged scammers refugees May 13, 2010

Five men charged over an alleged credit card skimming scam in Perth are refugees from Sri Lanka. At least one arrived on a boat. The revelation has raised concerns about the vetting of asylum seekers. The opposition border protection spokesman, Michael Keenan, said resources to screen asylum seekers were stretched because of the number of boat people arriving. A spokesman for the Immigration Minister, Chris Evans, said asylum seekers were subject to stringent checks. Two of the men are now citizens and two are permanent residents. The fifth was a student who applied for a protection visa and is a citizen.

I for one am glad that Indian migration have been severely restricted.

Those hypocritical idiots don't know how to appreciate the good of Australia and just stir shit over a few racial attacks.

Ethnic Chinese had it much worse and for longer but we don't, as guests to a country, flood the main streets and "demand" the host nation for more "rights".

Bunch of useless fucks, better they fuck back to India and see if they have more "rights" in being 1 in a population of billions.

See the welders entry, there is still hope for those without a degree to migrate. Go and work as a welder and pick up a PR application form in a few years time.

Now you see if your cost of living and housing wasnt so bloody expensive, this wont happen.

Boat people, chefs and hairdressers cant afford Australia anymore.

Gillard is a strategic thinker but I think she might not last long either - being the first woman PM in Australia its a lot to take on especially she has not been elected by the nation (I'm sure there's still quite a lot of kevin07 supporters out there). Secondly, she is not really a role model (being not married / no kids) and will have problem engaging the family class. However, I tend to agree the big Australia plan only make sense if it comes with a expansion plan in infrastructure, housing, public service, road, schools etc. Living in Sydney with only 4mil+ population already feel the heat with the lousy public transport and traffic; too many people want to live and work close to city, I'm sure this is the same in Melbourne as well. I hope more migrants will head to other cities but only if they can find jobs there but too much concentration are in these 2 big cities!

All we need is the underground trains ie MRT and relax on development guidelines.

Sadly, Australia still don't get. SG PAP did a good job on this ! But thanks for nothing.. I still prefer to stay in the land of chaos - where opportunities are plenty and the ppl are stupid :)

If you mixed with fools, you sure to be a genius ! hehehe

Na, Australia will never get a subway system, it would need more than a big Australia to make this happen. they just talk about implementing fibre optic broadband which already rolled out in Sg 10 yrs+ ago.

i wouldn't be that sure.

i've got family staying in Rouse Hill. According to them, under the Rouse Hill mall, they have build a underground train station & rail way links. it's ready to be operational once the rest of the stations & rail links are completed.

but i do agree that Syd & melb's infrstructure are a little inadequate now

underground train system is not high speed subway system like those u find in NYC, Paris, London, tokyo, Sg or HK.

In sydney it depends where u live. The North shore line tend to have better train frequency (where most upperclass/weatlhy people stay), some suburbs u are lucky to have a train every 10 mins even during peak hours(assuming no delay/breakdown).

I have to agree.. in good areas, you are often treated like a king. Councils are extremely on the ball in good areas.. trams and trains too !

My council is only on the ball when raising rates. Must be you people asking for free council-paid holidays.

If you ever come Perth, don't stay in suburbs run by Stirling.

Stay in Peppermint Grove, the council people come in to collect your wheelie bin, no need to push out to kerbside.

Somehow, those down-under people still have not figure out what is going on.

Sometimes, I wonder how Australia managed to pick up the worst Pom habits!

But it is good. Too efficient means we cannot afford to be so laid back.

Having fools around can be a good thing. They are fun to be around, compared to the Americans.

Those American friends I met on tours are so stressed keeping up with their neighbours. Cannot joke with them too much, they jump to defenses too quickly.
When we go to a wine cellar for a structured wine tasting, these Americans run for the wines like they have never seen them before, almost knocking the fools over. They hold on to the bottles for their dear lives, in case Obama restarts the Prohibition.

In Boroondara Council, we received excellent service.. the rates are reasonable and parks are extremely pleasing.. and it is very well maintained..

Brisbane City Council too provides a good service to me.. they mow my front lawn 6-10 times a year for free ;)

As long as your suburb is within the highly skilled professionals ie lawyers, politicians etc.. they have no choice but to lan-lan obey :D

That is the problem. I need more lawyers and politicians here, not people living on inheritance. It took 6 months to fix a street lamp!!!

I think I will work for the council and get free rate-payer paid holidays.

BTW, the money-face are turning parks & reserves into more housing.
