Supercar driver dies after head-on crash between his £75,000 Audi RA man has died after the £75,000 sports supercar he was driving ploughed into a bus.
Debris was strewn across the road after the white Audi R8 smashed head-on into the Arriva bus in Newcastle last night.
The 39-year-old driver was cut from the wreckage of the sports car by emergency crews, but was pronounced dead at the scene. The bus driver, 61, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
There were no passengers on the out-of-service single-decker at the time of the accident near Gosforth High Street.
Guests at nearby Gosforth Hotel returning from a pub witnessed the ‘horrendous’ crash, Gosforth Hotel staff said.
‘We’d had some customers in who had been at another pub and saw the crash. They said the driver was cut out but there was nothing the paramedics could do to save them,’ a female member of staff said.
Tony Batty, Head of Operations at Arriva said: ‘We are aware of an incident between a car and Arriva bus on Gosforth High Street.
‘The car driver was killed. Our concerns were for the bus driver and car driver’s family. The incident involved an out-of-service bus and the driver was taken to hospital.’

Northumbria Police confirmed that the accident occurred around 9pm on Sunday night when the two vehicles were travelling on the same carriageway, which resulted in a five-hour closure of the road.
A spokesperson confirmed that the 39-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene, adding that the busdriver is receiving treatment at the Royal Victoria Infirmary for minor injuries.
The Audi R8 is a two-seater sportscar which costs in excess of £75,000 when bought new and is capable of extremely high top speeds.
Any witnesses to the crash are being asked to contact Northumbria Police on non-emergency number 101.8 and a bus.
